Fantastic guide, communication could’ve been better (especially the agency)
★★★★☆ 4/5 Overall, we had an amazing experience on the Salkantay Trek. The scenery throughout the trek was incredible, and it was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Peru. The route was challenging at times, but the views and sense of achievement made it completely worthwhile. Our guide Emilio was excellent — very friendly, supportive and always happy to help, especially on the more difficult sections. Sergio, our chef, also did a great job. The food was consistently good considering the conditions, although a little more meat/protein would have been appreciated. The facilities and accommodation were decent throughout the trek, although it was slightly frustrating having to pay separately in cash for things like showers and Wi-Fi. Communication before and during the trek could also have been clearer. It would have been helpful to know in advance exactly how much cash we would need for things such as tolls, bag transportation, tips and sleeping bag hire. Tuesday was definitely the toughest day for us, with Thursday a close second due to the long hours of walking. That said, the challenge is a big part of what makes the trek so rewarding. Overall, a fantastic experience with amazing scenery, a great group and an excellent guide and chef. It did feel slightly expensive for what was included, although some of this may be down to the agency rather than the trekking company itself. Despite that, I would definitely recommend the trek and would do it again.

Amazing experience - Salkantay and Ausangate
Carlo was there to help me from the very start. While Salkantay is pretty popular, Ausangate isn't chosen by as many people, but he did everything possible to make the Ausangate trek happen for me! Salkantay Trek: A great experience heading to Machu Picchu. The whole team was amazing, but a special shoutout goes to the chef—I'm vegetarian, and he prepared incredible custom meals just for me! Ausangate Trek: Perfect for those who truly enjoy trekking and being immersed in nature. It was an amazing trek to discover the local Peruvian countryside and culture.

The closest you’ll ever get to Indiana Jones
We ended up walking into Carlos' agency by chance, and we immediately had a great first impression. He took the time to explain the entire itinerary, timings, and fees in detail, which made us feel confident about booking. Three days later, at 4:00 a.m., we were on the bus with our group of 15 people. At first, we thought that might be too many, but it actually turned out to be one of the best parts of the experience. The group atmosphere was fantastic. The trek itself was, of course, stunning, with an incredible variety of landscapes: turquoise mountain lakes, breathtaking glaciers, lush valleys, forests, rivers... every day felt different. The accommodations exceeded our expectations. There were shower facilities on the 2nd night (10 soles), and free hot showers on the 3rd and 4th nights. A special shout-out to Sergio and Roberto, our chefs, for the amazing food. Every meal was delicious, generous, varied, and very vegetarian-friendly. In terms of difficulty, I'd say the first day's climb is quite steep but only lasts around two hours. The second day is supposed to be the hardest, but it felt very manageable as long as you're well acclimatised to the altitude. The third day was probably the most fun, with the hot springs (not included in the price), and on the fourth day, if you've already secured your Machu Picchu tickets (which we highly recommend), you get to enjoy a beautiful section of the Inca Trail. Otherwise, you'll have to rush to queue for tickets in Aguas Calientes, and you may end up having to wait two extra days if they're sold out. On a personal note, I twisted my ankle on the descent, but luckily there's a train from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes (quite expensive at $41 one way). After four days with almost no connection to the outside world (Wi-Fi is available at some accommodations, but honestly it's nice to disconnect), arriving in Aguas Calientes feels like stepping back into civilisation after an Indiana Jones adventure! There's also a good medical clinic there—especially useful if you manage to slip while listening to Lady Gaga like I did! The fifth and final day (unless you're waiting for ticket availability)... the Holy Grail: Machu Picchu. You can either take the bus or hike the stairs for about an hour. The site is simply incredible. Despite being a victim of its own popularity, it absolutely lives up to the hype. The energy of the place is something special. A special mention to Max, our guide, who was incredibly kind, funny, and knowledgeable. He was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Overall, you should be in decent physical shape and properly acclimatised to the altitude, but I wouldn't describe the trek as extremely difficult. There are plenty of breaks, and although the pace is fairly dynamic, everyone is free to hike at their own rhythm. Excellent value for money: $185 per person for 5 days/4 nights, plus around 200 soles for extras (showers, buses, hot springs, tips, etc.). One final environmental note: the mules carry very heavy loads. If you're able to carry your own backpack, it's worth considering. It's good exercise for you and a little kinder to the animals. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. You can book with your eyes closed... just make sure to open them once you're there! Sore Legs, Full Heart, Worth Every Step. Book It. Amazing Salkantay Experience
The Salkantay Trek was an incredible experience from start to finish. The scenery was absolutely stunning, the guides were friendly and knowledgeable, and everything was very well organized. The food was surprisingly delicious and exceeded my expectations for a multi-day trek. It was challenging at times, but every step was worth it. The only minor downside was that there were a few extra costs that weren't included, such as transporting your duffel bag after day three. It wasn't expensive, but it would have been nice to know in advance. Overall, I highly recommend this trek to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in Peru.
