Mehrauli Archaeological Park guided walk
Salmen & Heena took us on a guided walk to Mehrauli Archaeological Park. We booked as we had really enjoyed a guided city walk with Heena the previous day. We had a brilliant afternoon. Both Salmen & Heena are great guides. The walk was very informative, entertaining. Salmen and Heena were open to questions and discussions, and we're generally great company. They are also fabulous advocates for the Salaam Balaak Trust. Thank you both!

Highlight of my trip
This was the best experience! The guide Shehla went far beyond the description. Spending the day with a resident was so valuable and will help me navigate the rest of the trip. The shopping tour was amazing and her choices of shops and markets was so insightful, everything fit my style perfectly and I wish I could have bought more - suitcase management prohibited this from happening. Lunch was excellent and the samosas were divine. The rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk market in the evening was exceptional & truly exhilarating and should not be missed. Our driver RK was in a word lovely, quite a good sense of humour and a ton of patience in crazy traffic. I would highly recommend this excursion for everyone but especially solo travellers.

City walk was fantastic. Temple tour was ok. Premium price for hotel pickup/drop off
The city walk was really great and I’ve left another review on their page. The city walk can be booked by itself (I didn’t realise) and only costs 400INR. This tour costs a lot more because you are paying for the driver to pick you up, take you between the two tours and drop you back at home. The driver was fantastic and the car was very clean. The driver dropped us in the city because we wanted to get lunch and was ok with driving further than the hotel. The temple tour was a bit rushed and didn’t include lunch or volunteering! The guide spoke fantastic English and was very knowledgeable. We got to have a tour of the temple and then went into the huge kitchen to see the meals being prepared. However, it was more of a “come here, flip this, stand behind this pot” instead of actually helping at all. Also, we left without eating anything :( The tour started at 10 and finished at 2. The walking tour went till about 1230. I think the temple guides were expecting us much earlier because they seemed really rushed. Unless you need the hotel transfers and are willing to pay a premium then I would definitely recommend doing the walking tour by itself and maybe the temple tour.

More fundraising than exposure and experience
The Salaam Baalak Trust City Walk tour was more propaganda and fundraising than actual exposure and involvement with the city children of Delhi. The tour had us walk around the Delhi railroad station with a very nice 17 year old young woman who proceeded to talk more about the Trust than actually explain the tragic city street life of the children the Trust is supposed to help. Out of the two hours of the tour about 20 minutes was actually spent interacting with any children. In addition, the volunteering at a local community kitchen never took place. It was substituted with a ride to a sheik temple and some proselyting pamphlets. Overall what should have been a moving and inspiring tour ended up being more of a 3rd rate fundraiser.
Response from the operator: Hi David, Salaam baalak is a "Trust" and does work on people's donation. But never during or after the walk, anyone asks the guests to donate money. The guide's who are basically the kids rehabilitated by the trust would share their story. If the guests ask more questions, they are always ready to answer. They must be doing something right that Prince William and Kate also visited the trust during their trip to India in 2016. The Sikh temple "Bangla Sahib Gurudwara" is the biggest free community kitchen in Delhi. The raw material for the food is donated by the people, the food is prepared and served by the people. The food is served to anyone and everyone irrespective of their Gender, religion & social status. Since it is a "community" kitchen no one gives order's to people what they have to do. People come and find work and be part of the community. We have had guests on this tour who have spent considerable time cooking food, serving food or even washing dishes.
