What you'll see and do
Vesuvius National Park
This is the tourist transport service that connects the ancient Herculaneum to the Gran Cono del Vesuvio. The shortest and at the same time the most spectacular route to visit the most famous volcano in the world. The territory of the Vesuvius National Park is a concentration of naturalistic riches, history of volcanology, breathtaking landscapes, centuries-old crops and traditions that make the Vesuvius area one of the most fascinating and among the most visited places in the world. The story of the bond that unites man to fire tells the epic of a future that takes place along two lines that intersect several times, move away, find themselves united and divide again. A story of existence and distance, distance first taken then revoked, first immense, which shrinks and widens again in an imperfect fire/man union, with no possibility of real closeness.

Service as expected, very simple way to visit Vesuvius
From the UK it was hard to book tickets direct to Vesuvius National Park, so I opted for the transport and ticket option offered by Vesuvius express. Process was very simple - train to Ercolano station, the office of Vesuvio Express is just outside the railway station and the bus parks about 100m away. Departed on time at 11am, we were give our timed entrance tickets to the park. The journey up takes about 30 mins - it's a very windy road. You get 1.5 hours to go to the crater rim and back down to catch the coach back down, which is plenty of time - the ascent only took us about 20-25 minutes and we had a drink at the top, walked down in about 15 minutes. The return coach was about 15 minutes late, but the road is narrow and busy with tour coaches so it is understandable that delays can occur - just factor in some additional time if you have something booked after at Ercolano!

long wait when we came back
We had a nice time at Vesuvius, however we had to wait about 1 hour at the meeting point for the bus back. It was long wait but there was a staff member who updated the situation which was reassuring.

To do absolutely but harm yourself with patience…
The experience itself was very nice. Very impressive crater and well worth the climb with spectacular views over Naples. The transport though was absolutely chaotic. No lines, people pushing to get into the bus, no organisation whatsoever. Thankfully there were buses every 5 minutes but for the return we really had to fight to get into the bus. Would be great to improve the organisation to make it a more memorable experience.

+
On Outty we rank every Naples experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens Small Group Tour with Shuttle, Naples Guided Tour by Bike, Naples Pizza and Tiramisu Cooking Class. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Naples?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Naples?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
