About this experience

When daylight fades, postcard Rome clocks off, and a far older, stranger city takes its place. Join the city’s original and award-winning Rome ghost tour through lamplit piazzas, twisting lanes and quiet corners where the past has an inconvenient habit of lingering. Led by an expert storyteller, you’ll enter a world of forbidden magic, papal scandal, public executions, deadly ambition and restless spirits. Behind grand façades lie stories Rome would probably prefer you didn’t hear: crimes that became legends, legends that may contain more truth than anyone expected, and several people who took death rather badly. In a small group of no more than 15, lose yourself in the atmosphere as familiar streets become darker, stranger and far more interesting. Expect suspense, vivid storytelling and sharp humour as haunted Rome slowly reveals itself. Come curious. Leave looking over your shoulder, and wondering what else may be walking home with you.

Amazing tour through the heart of Rome!

Had an amazing time on the Dark Side of Rome tour. Alice was an excellent storyteller, patient and with a great sense of humour. Would definitely recommend!

Great and Interesting Tour

We had a great experience with Alice as our guide. Alice gave a lot of information and we had a few laughs too. Wasn’t a scary tour and not very ghostly but very interesting. Would highly recommend this tour. Thank you Alice 😎

Would have been amazing...

Would have been amazing if our guide knew anything about the sites. This was the most bizarre tour ever, not because of the locations but because our guide read from an iPad the entire tour.

Response from the operator: Thank you, Kristine. We’re very sorry this was your experience. We do use the iPad during the tour to show images and give visual context to the stories, but the guide should not be reading the tour from it. By this stage, the material should be fully known. We’ll be raising this directly with the guide, as it’s not the standard we expect.

Look no further for a characterful evening experience!

My partner and I thought this tour was fantastic! Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging and clearly had a lot of experience - the stories were delivered smoothly and succinctly at each stop but in a conversational manner with a lot of passion and enthusiasm for Rome's dark history and the people that feature within it. If, like me, you like to use ghost tours as a way to walk the lesser-known back streets of a city and to take in the vibes and the character that way, then this tour is also perfect for you. We passed through some stunning side streets and back alleys, each one brimming with charm, history and beautiful architecture to draw the eye. We also passed through what seemed like a pretty chiq neighbourhood with many intriguing bars and restaurants (we will definitely return to). Finally, the views of the basilica and the river from the bridge as the sun was setting were gorgeous, all whilst being entertained by macabre tales of Rome's dark side! What's not to love?

Response from the operator: Thank you, Nicholas. We’re delighted the tour hit exactly the right note for you. The lesser-known streets are a big part of the experience, because Rome’s best character is often hiding away from the main monuments. Add dark history, beautiful architecture, a few suspiciously good bars, and sunset over the river, and the city starts showing off a bit.

Good but expected more out of such an old city.

I have done lots of ghost tours in many towns I visit. This was good but surprised by lack of more specific encounters. Our guide was very helpful and friendly though.

Response from the operator: Thank you, Jeremy. We’re glad you enjoyed the tour and found the guide helpful and friendly. Our Rome's Dark Side Tour blends reported hauntings with darker historical stories, rather than focusing only on specific paranormal encounters. Rome has no shortage of the latter history, even if the ghosts remain annoyingly selective about attendance.

Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.

How much does Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour take?

+

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.

Is Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 83 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 116 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour?

+

Around 41 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Rome's Dark Side Ghosts and Legends Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

+

Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

+

April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rome?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
