The community lived in harmony with the rest of the population and enjoyed considerable freedom — an example of religious tolerance that unfortunately was not later extended to any of the reformed Christian creeds. Roman Jews by contrast, were forced to live enclosed in the ghetto between the 1500s and 1800s, had an imposed curfew, and several other restrictions. The sad, crumbling remains of this walled district known as "Ghetto," was torn down only in the 19th century.

The Portico of Octavia

In this market, Jewish women used to collect the market waste in order to cook their famous fish broth. We will travel from the Roman age through the Middle ages and the Renaissance when important Roman families settled there and built their noble palaces. On the inscriptions all over this area, you can read about the horrible events that occurred during the Nazi occupation of Rome in 1943-44. This tour will give you a chance to walk through fascinating buildings and revive tragic but important memories of the past. You’ll appreciate the vivid atmosphere of the neighborhood today, where you can still have a glimpse of the past, tasting some of the delicatessen, typical Jewish pastry, or the famous fried artichokes.

Very good tour
Yael showed us around. She works in the Jewish Community and knows everybody. Detailed interesting explanation about the Jews in Rome over the centuries backed by great illustrations putting modern landmarks into their historical detail. Walked us around a small Jewish museum explain in detail about the exhibits. Really great tour

Small group tour with great guide
Francesca organized a great tour of Rome from a Jewish perspective. Starting with a look at the arch of Titus and ending at the Roman synagogue, the tour covers nearly 2000 years of history from ancient Rome to WWII, with landmarks adding important context. We were also the only people who booked the tour at the time, so there was plenty of personal attention and opportunity to ask questions. Francesca was also very knowledgable about the subject matter.

Francesca was an educated delight! Her English and command of the history of the Jewish Quarter made our experience top-notch. There wasn't a question she couldn't answer and her warm personality didn't hurt either!

Very Educational
We ended up being the only ones who signed up for this tour so, it was great to have such amazing brillant lovely tour guide. She fed us so much information, she was so knowlegeable, she is Professor at one of the local Universities in Italy.
