Colosseum

From the walkway you look down into the hypogeum, the two-level basement of tunnels and lifts that pushed animals and gladiators up into the arena, and out across seating built to hold roughly 50,000 people in a stadium that could empty in minutes. Arch of Constantine
On the way out you pass beneath the largest triumphal arch left standing in Rome, 21 metres high and raised in AD 315 for Constantine's victory at the Milvian Bridge. Look closely at the sculpture: much of it was stripped from earlier monuments to Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, with the old emperors' faces recut into Constantine's.

Spend the money for a tour. Without it, you might be lost as the signage is spotty at best.
This is probably the best way to see the colosseum and forum. You get in much quicker than the people who purchase tickets for entry. I also learned a bit more about what I was looking at. Our guide was very good though he did tend to repeat himself. I was grateful for his knowledge of the forum as there were things I tried to find out about on Palatine Hill that were too vague to discover by myself. By the time the tour was over, (almost 3 hours), I was hot and tired and could do little more in the way of site seeing the area on my own. I wish I could have explored Palatine Hill a bit more knowing the history of who lived there, but that will have to be another visit! The hardest part of the whole experience was finding out where the tour started. I was there 30 minutes early, but not clear on the meeting point even using the address provided by viator and a maps app. I arrived just in time to sign in an leave.
