About this experience

A guided tour through the most iconic Roman monument in the fascinating night atmosphere after the regular opening hours when the crowds are gone. You will meet your tour Coordinator outside the Colosseum metro station just across the street from the monument. After a brief introduction, our friendly guide will accompany you to the skip-the-line entrance, for fast lane access. Once inside, begin your tour below ground and explore the Colosseum’s tunnels, chambers and pits. This section of the Colosseum is restricted to the public and only allows a limited number of visitors each day, so enjoy this exclusive chance to see more than most people do. Admire the lifts that brought to life Rome’s hunting games. Next you will have access to the reconstructed portion of the arena floor to hear the stories of the bloody gladiatorial battles. You'll stand in the very same spot where the games took place. This is a unique experience reserved to a restricted number of visitors. Don't miss it !

Unique

We did this Underground Tour with Partner and friends, so hard to get tickets and very expensive. Large group so it was hard to get all the commentry. Still worthwhile and pleased we did it

Response from the operator: Thank you so much, Pamela! We're glad you chose our Underground Night Tour and that you found it worthwhile despite the challenges. You're absolutely right—these tickets are notoriously difficult to secure due to the limited nightly access, which also contributes to the higher price point. We appreciate your honesty about the group size and commentary; we'll review our audio equipment to ensure clearer sound for all guests. We're pleased you and your group had a unique experience and hope to welcome you back to Rome for more adventures in the future. Grazie mille!

Only 1 hour

Loved that it was a very small group but we were hurried. We were told we’d get a chance to take pictures later but we didn’t get a chance. Tour was supposed to be hour 30 but we were out in 1 hour. It was a lot of money to not get the full length of time.

Response from the operator: Dear Billie, Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you appreciated the small group setting, but we're genuinely sorry to hear that the tour felt rushed and that you didn't get the photo opportunities you were hoping for. To clarify, the Colosseum by Night tour is listed as approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, with the guided portion typically lasting around 1 hour 15 minutes. That said, we completely understand your disappointment if the experience fell short of the 1.5 hours you were expecting. We also recognize that being told you'd have time for photos later and then not receiving that opportunity is frustrating, and we apologize for that. We will review this with our guide to ensure the pacing allows for adequate photo stops, as this is an important part of the experience. As a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer you a 20% partial refund. Please let us know if you accept, and we will process it promptly. We hope you'll give us another opportunity in the future to provide the full experience you deserve. Sincerely, Discover Rome Tours

The Colosseum at Night is a MUST see!

Not only is it amazing to see lit up at night, but they allow a very limited number of groups in at night, so it is likely the least busy you will see it! Our guide was knowledgeable and made the tour really engaging with her storytelling!

Response from the operator: Thanks, Kasey! We're so glad you loved the night tour—fewer crowds and great storytelling make it a must-see! Hope to see you again in Rome!

Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.

How much does Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $99 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour take?

+

Plan for about 1.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.

Is Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.1/5 across 429 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable nightlife in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 240 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 2. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1.3-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour?

+

Around 150 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 1.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Rome: Colosseum by Night Guided Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

+

Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

+

April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rome?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
