About this experience
Rome keeps some of its most gripping history underground, and this tour takes you straight to it with an expert guide and round-trip transport from the city center. You start among the bone-lined chapels of the Capuchin Crypts, where the remains of generations of friars form haunting displays, then ride out along the ancient Appian Way, passing the Aurelian Walls and the Circus Maximus. Underground again, you follow dim corridors through one of Rome's early Christian catacombs, tracing frescoed chambers and tombs once reserved for martyrs and popes. Your guide fills in the stories behind each site, so you leave with a real sense of how the early Christian world took shape beneath the city. Pick the version that fits you best: join the group tour with catacombs and crypts, choose a catacombs-only express visit, go after hours when the sites are quiet, or book a private tour with hotel pickup and extra stops.

SCAM, DO NOT BOOK
Only giving 1 star because 0 isn't an option. My wife and I booked the Roman Catacombs tour for our honeymoon trip. We arrived at the meeting point for the tour before the designated start time, only to find that nobody from the tour company was there. We waited for about 15 minutes before contacting the company, sure that there had been some kind of mistake. When we finally got in touch with them, the representative was extremely rude and essentially told us that the tour had already started, that they waited for us, and implied that we must be lying because "other guests found the tour just fine." Again--we were at the meeting point THEY provided BEFORE the tour was set to leave. Had there been a tour group waiting for us, we'd have seen them immediately. It was not a crowded area. After about ten minutes on the phone (now about 45 minutes post when our tour was supposed to start), we asked for a refund, as our experience was soured and we immediately realized we'd been scammed out of our money. This triggered what I can only describe as the company's "eff you" response, which, in brief, was reaffirming their stance that we were either lying or stupid, that the tour left on time, and that they waited for us. So, under no circumstances would we get a refund. We could, however, rebook at a 60% discount (which would be fantastic if we were looking to get scammed out of more money!). The representative also, over the course of the phone call, used phrases like "we're not sure" or "we don't know what happened," which is an insane thing to say after assuring us the tour left on time. I should add, my wife and I book tours like this often and have never experienced anything as shady as this. Just the night before, we arrived to a tour at the start time and there were no issues whatsoever, and the meeting area was in a very crowded plaza. To add, the manager refused to speak to us for a myriad of excuses that kept changing each time we asked.

Great experience, just a bit too long
Our guide was very knowledgeable and the catacombs are definitely a sight to see however, the tour was a bit too long for us. It was also so hot outside, so hard to pay attention to all the details when you’re just dying to go in! But it was a great way to see everything instead of doing it on your own. We rode in air conditioned vans from the crips to the catacombs which was honestly the best part. Would recommend to those really interested in the history, but if you want to just see the crips/catacombs, I think you could do that at your own pace and just taxi from one to the other.

The Catacombs crypts and...
The Catacombs crypts and Ra Rome Catacombs were very interesting. Our guide was very nice. We enjoyed hearing about when she was a child, her dad loved the crypts so much he took her and her younger brother and they couldn't sleep for a week! Lol
Response from the operator: Hi Linda, thank you for sharing! We love that your guide shared that funny childhood story—it really makes the Capuchin Crypts even more unforgettable. We hope to welcome you on another adventure soon!

Fascinating Tour, Well worth it
Our guide, David, was very knowledgeable. He told us a lot about the Capuchin Crypt and its history. It’s fascinating. There is a Caravaggio painting there. I friend of mine who is a big fan of Caravaggio couldn’t believe it. David took us to the crypt first and we were allowed to wonder around at our own pace. We then went to the catacombs. They were very interesting as well and our guide there was very good.
Response from the operator: Thanks, Karyn! We’re really glad you found the tour so fascinating and that David brought the history to life for you. It sounds like the visit to the crypt was a real highlight, especially for your friend. We’ll pass your kind words on to David and the team. Thanks again for joining us!

Why this scores 85
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.
How much does Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers cost?
+
Prices start at $33 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers take?
+
Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.
Is Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 85 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 903 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers?
+
Around 316 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Rome Catacombs & Capuchin Crypts Group Tour with Transfers start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Rome?
+
Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Rome?
+
April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Rome?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
