A powerful way to experience Afro-Brazilian history in Rio
The Favela Art & Little Africa Heritage tour with Florencios Tours & Travel was one of the most meaningful experiences I had in Rio. It was scenic, informative, and deeply connective. Scarlet is an exceptional guide—warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the history, the places, and the people. She welcomed us like old friends and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable throughout the day. She also handled our thoughtful (and sometimes challenging) questions with patience and depth. The tour of Tavares Bastos (Favela da Providência) was fascinating, especially visiting The Maze, a stunning mosaic art house/gallery built with contributions from artists around the world. The founder’s wife even gave us a personal tour, which made the experience feel very special. The Little Africa portion was powerful. Visiting Valongo Wharf and learning about the history of the quilombos and the legacy of Zumbi added a profound historical layer to the experience. The tour ended at Pedra do Sal with traditional angu, which was delicious and a perfect cultural finish. Pro Tip: be sure to order a pineapple capirinha with your Angu. You can thank me later 😉 Who it's for: If you want a deeper innerstanding of Afro-Brazilian history and culture in Rio, I highly recommend this tour.
Response from the operator: Dear Cushim, Thank you so much for this beautiful and thoughtful review. We are truly happy to know that your Favela Art & Little Africa Heritage experience with Florencios Tours & Travel was one of the most meaningful moments of your time in Rio. We are especially grateful for your kind words about Escarlet. She is deeply committed to sharing Rio’s history, culture, and communities with warmth, respect, and knowledge, and we are so glad you felt welcomed, cared for, and engaged throughout the day. Thoughtful questions are always part of a meaningful cultural exchange, and it is wonderful to know that she helped make those conversations rich and memorable. We are also happy that Tavares Bastos, The Maze, and the Little Africa portion of the tour touched you in such a powerful way. From community art and local stories to Valongo Wharf, quilombo history, Zumbi’s legacy, and Pedra do Sal, this experience was designed to connect Rio’s beauty with its deeper Afro-Brazilian roots, resilience, and cultural memory. And yes — ending with traditional angu and a pineapple caipirinha sounds like the perfect cultural finish! Thank you for sharing that pro tip with future travelers. It was an honor to welcome you in Rio, and we hope to see you again in Brazil for more private and bespoke experiences with Florencios. With gratitude, Damiana Silva Founder | Florencios Tours & Travel Connecting Cultures. Creating Memories.

Real Rio. Real Perspective. Respect to Ana & Julia.
This was easily one of the most eye-opening experiences I had in Rio. Major respect to Ana and Julia. It was Ana’s first time leading this tour and you honestly couldn’t tell. She and Julia worked together seamlessly — confident, knowledgeable, and most importantly respectful to the community. That matters. This isn’t some surface-level “tour.” It’s perspective. It’s understanding how real people live, build, create, and support each other in a part of the city most visitors never see. The views from up there? Unreal. Some of the best in Rio. But what stuck with me more were the conversations and the pride of the people who live there. There’s the version you see in headlines… and then there’s the reality on the ground. This tour gives you that reality. If you come to Rio and only stay in Copacabana or Ipanema, you’re seeing the postcard. This gave me depth. Easy 5 out of 5. I’d absolutely recommend it — especially if you actually want to understand the city beyond the beaches.
Response from the operator: Dear Antedurham, Thank you so much for this powerful and thoughtful review. We are truly grateful for your words. We are especially happy to know that the experience gave you a deeper perspective of Rio beyond the postcard views. This is exactly what we believe a meaningful favela experience should offer: respect for the community, real human connection, local stories, and a better understanding of how people live, create, support one another, and build culture every day. Your kind words about Ana and Julia mean a lot to us. We are very proud of Ana, especially knowing this was her first time leading this tour, and we are so glad you felt her confidence, knowledge, and care. Julia’s presence and support also helped make the experience flow with respect and authenticity, which is essential for us. Thank you for recognizing that this is not a surface-level tour. At Florencios Tours & Travel, we are committed to offering experiences that are responsible, respectful, and culturally meaningful — always with care for the communities we visit and for the travelers who trust us. It was an honor to welcome you in Rio, and we hope to see you again in Brazil for more private and bespoke experiences that reveal the city beyond the beaches. With gratitude, Damiana Silva Founder | Florencios Tours & Travel Connecting Cultures. Creating Memories.

Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rio de Janeiro.
How much does Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List cost?
+
Prices start at $175 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rio de Janeiro usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rio de Janeiro is not rushed.
Is Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rio de Janeiro, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rio de Janeiro can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rio de Janeiro and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Rio Favela Tour | Why a Favela Tour Should Be on Your Bucket List start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rio de Janeiro within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Rio de Janeiro?
+
On Outty we rank every Rio de Janeiro experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Pedra da Gávea hike, your best experience in Rio, Favela Tour Rio de Janeiro - Vidigal Walking Tour by Russo Guide, Rio's Full Day: Selarón Steps, Christ & Sugarloaf – Tickets & Lunch Included. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Rio de Janeiro?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
