The Rhino and Lion Reserve is an excellent venue to spend an afternoon or morning viewing some of Africa’s most beautiful animals in an attractive and open environment close to Jo’burg and Pretoria. Reachable in about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria it’s particularly suited if you do not have the time to visit one of the larger reserves further away. Important: Do not confuse with the Lion Park which is much smaller and does not have the same number of animals. Here also the Lions/Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs although not roaming free with the other animals are in much bigger and more humane spaces. This greatly reduces their aggressive behavior towards the vehicles viewing them.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

Arriving at the park, spend 2 hours in the park being guided by an experienced and qualified guide. It's recommended that you go there for a either a half-day, or full-day tour combined with another of the regions attractions. Tours there in a 4x4 vehicle are popular because of the advantageous viewing and it affords access to more of the park. Here roaming free are rhinoceros, many antelope species including the rare sable, zebras, warthogs and many smaller mammals. In separate enclosures are lions, cheetahs and African wild dogs. There is a licensed restaurant at the centre of the reserve where you can stop for lunch in between viewing the game and the distant views of Johannesburg from the top of one of the koppies. This reserve is an excellent opportunity for the hurried visitor to Gauteng to see some of South Africa’s famous fauna.

    Family holiday

We spent the whole day driving threw the park, we failed to see any Rhino's or many of the other animals listed. We did see Zebras, and wilder beasts and luckily some white Lions.

Response from the operator: Hi Lancashire, I have searched our tour diary and booking system, Viator cms and I cannot find any record of Mmilo Tours doing this tour for you. So maybe you got us mixed up with someone else. Be that as it may, suffice to say, any tour operator can get a review like this. It's all to do with the animals, and sometimes they just don't turn up quite how you want them to, and this is not within anyones control. Our guides do their best to find as many as they can for the client and use all their skills to do so, but there is still the element of luck, good or bad, and to some extent, on some days, the weather. Its important to try to do more than one game drive, maybe at least two days on safari, and then in general the luck will even out for you. Of course, one drive is better than none, and if that is all you have time for, then you might still not be disappointed, and some of our reviews will bear that out. The only place you can predict what animals you are going to see exactly is a Zoo I am afraid.

    Unforgettable Experience in Johannesburg !!

We booked an 8 hour Rhino and Lion Park guided tour with the Anton ! First let me say that Anton made this overall tour such a memorable experience for my friend and I ! He was very knowledgeable about South Africa as a whole, and brought passion for the entire 8 hours. We originally were supposed to be at the park for the whole day, but were notified when we got there that the park would be closed at 1pm that day leaving us with a few hours to see the animals. Anton immediately suggested another solution and added to drive us to see the Sterkfontein Caves right after ! We got a chance to see all the beautiful animals the safari had to offer, have a delicious lunch with our tour guide Anton, and to end the day seeing the underground caves! I would give Anton 10 out of 10 stars for his professionalism, his expertise with his knowledge of the safari animals, and just being a great person and providing laughs for my friend and I during the time we spent with him. Was a pleasure meeting him! Go book this tour you will not be disappointed !!
