Reykjanes Geothermal, Volcanoes and Cliffs Small Group Tour

Really great experience...

Cross-posted from TripAdvisor by me. I really enjoyed this tour with our great tour guide, Teka. It scratched some itches for me as I have a degree in geology, but I never really worked in that field....but I am still intersted in such things. The sites we visited were a good mix of things to see. I probably enjoyed the mudpots and geothermal springs the most (see above) but visiting Grindavik, a town that was evacuated and abandoned because of a volcanic eruption and lava flows was surreal. All in all I was very pleased with the tour and our guide.,...5 stars!

Volcanoes, Cliffs & Geothermal Wonders

We had a wonderful experience exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland with our guide, Teka. We saw beautiful landscapes, rugged coastline, and vast evidence of Iceland's volcanic history. The highlight was learning about the country's unique geothermal activity as a source of renewable energy, about which Teka was especially knowledgeable. We began at Kleifarvatn Lake, a stunning and peaceful volcanic lake surrounded by dramatic mountains. From there, we visited Seltún, where the colorful geothermal landscape, bubbling mud pots, and steaming ground gave an otherworldly feel. There also happened to be a team of scientists working that day so we heard a little bit about how they're using microbiology to explore the possibilities for life on other planets. We stopped in Grindavík, a town that has become an important part of Iceland’s recent volcanic story. Seeing the area in person, along with a photo exhibition showing recent fissure eruptions and their aftermath, gave us a deeper appreciation for the power of nature and the resilience of the local community. From there, we drove through vast lava fields to Brimketill, which was a striking example of Iceland’s rugged coastline and black sands. The Reykjanesviti lighthouse gave another opportunity to learn about the area's history. Our last stop was the Bridge Between Continents, a unique and memorable place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are pulling apart. (We chose to spend extra time there instead of the optional stop to the Blue Lagoon, since we had been there the day before.) We did some exploring and had fun photo opportunities. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastline, and incredible natural beauty in one memorable day. We felt especially fortunate to have Teka as our guide, since another party had cancelled and so the group ended up being just the two of us! It was kind of him to still allow us to have this amazing experience and it was excellent value for the price.

A Great Iceland Experience

Teka was fantastic! We arrived in Iceland a day before our cruise and Teka took us on the golden circle; it was fabulous. Then, he came back to the hotel and took us to the airport. When our cruise was done, we had a day before our flight back home. Teka picked us up and took us on a tour of the capital then took us to see more fabulous places. He is knowledgeable of the area and was a great host. I am a photographer and he pointed our opportunities that I might be interested in - he was right!
