About this experience
Experience Japanese cuisine in Fuki no Niwa, a beautifully preserved 128-year-old townhouse in Tokyo, where you’ll discover the secrets of dashi, the foundation of Japanese cooking. The third-generation owner of a long-established dried food shop personally guides you, sharing tips to recreate its rich flavors at home. Start by making historic Miso-dama — miso and dashi balls once enjoyed by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, then try your skills at making Abura Soba, the savory soupless ramen, tossing noodles in flavorful dashi. This townhouse, Fuki no Niwa, was used traditionally until 10 years ago. The property includes a garden to enjoy seasonal Japanese plants. With sliding shoji doors and antique furnishings, it offers a nostalgic atmosphere perfect for photos. Combining culinary history, hands-on fun, and cultural heritage, this program provides an unforgettable journey into Japan’s rich food culture. Personal Caring Cultural Experience
If you have time for this class, we cannot recommend it highly enough! Etsuko took such great care with our family before, during, and after our experience. We learned so much about dashi and miso and Japanese culture. We really felt like friends and not just guests. The home beings to Etsuko’s friend, Kiyomi, who also accompanied us in the class and showed is her family garden and squeezed us juice fresh from the bitter orange tree in the yard. Etsuko gave us so much information about the area and places that interested us for us to visit before and after. This has been the highlight of our little visit to Tokyo!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind and heartfelt review. It truly means a lot to me. It was such a pleasure spending time with your wonderful family. I’m very happy that you enjoyed learning about dashi, miso, and Japanese culture together as a shared experience. Kiyomi was also delighted to meet you and loved showing you her family garden and sharing the fresh bitter orange juice with you. I’m especially honored to hear that this became a highlight of your visit to Tokyo. I hope our paths cross again someday, either in Japan or somewhere else in the world. Warmest wishes, Etsuko

A Beautiful Cultural Experience in a Traditional Japanese Home
We had such a wonderful time doing this activity! Elsuko and Kiomy were amazing hosts — so warm and welcoming from the very start. The traditional Japanese house was absolutely beautiful, with a lovely big garden that made the experience even more special. We learned about different kinds of miso and got to make our own miso balls and great noodle — such a fun and unique experience! Their original Dashi brand was also delicious. The neighborhood around the old house is quiet and full of charm — a real hidden gem to discover. We truly loved every moment and would 100% recommend this experience!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are truly happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with us. Welcoming you into our traditional Japanese home and sharing miso-making and noodles together was such a pleasure. We’re also delighted that you liked our original dashi and the quiet charm of the neighborhood — it’s a place we love and are always excited to share. You created such beautiful miso balls, and your warm presence made the experience special for us as well. We hope to welcome you back again someday! Thank you truly for choosing our experience.

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.
How much does Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo cost?
+
Prices start at $90 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.
Is Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Ramen and Miso Ball Workshop in Historic Tokyo start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Tokyo?
+
Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Tokyo?
+
Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Tokyo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
