Rainbow mountain with Sparrow Travel All the Way!
I strongly recommend Sparrow Travel without a moment's hesitation. We visited Peru in July of 2026. Our guide, Abel, was not only incredibly knowledgeable, well-connected, and experienced, he demonstrated exceptional intelligence, professionalism, and ethics throughout our experience - not to mention having a great sense of humour and good judgement. Abel speaks English, Spanish, and Quechua fluently, and has strong personal and cultural connections within the region. If you're fortunate enough to have him as your guide, your trip will be that much more memorable. Edison, our driver, was unshakably positive, friendly, and accommodating at every turn. The Rainbow Mountain trip specifically is a fairly involved endeavor and requires a three hour microbus ride through paved and unpaved roads, community checkpoints, and, in places, the inevitable crowds, swarming altitude signposts for photos on the summit. Navigating this business requires time, money, and planning so it was reassuring to have a solid guide on our team to get it all done. Moreover, at 5000+ meters, Vinicunca is not to be sneezed at. Physical conditioning helps, but so does experience and a positive attitude. Choose Sparrow Travel for a tailor-made experience you'll actually enjoy in the moment and in the memories afterwards.

I strongly recommend Sparrow Travel without a moment's hesitation. Read on to find out why. If you plan to visit Peru, particularly in the Cusco region, out this company at the top of your list. We visited Peru in July of 2026. Our guide, Abel, was not only incredibly knowledgeable, well-connected, and experienced, he demonstrated exceptional intelligence, professionalism, and ethics throughout our experience - not to mention having a great sense of humour and good judgement. Abel speaks English, Spanish, and Quechua fluently, and has strong personal and cultural connections within the region. If you're fortunate enough to have him as your guide, your trip will be that much more memorable. Edison, our driver, took us through some pretty dicey terrain with ease through the Sacred Valley and the road up to Vinicunca including a stretch of hairpin switchbacks edging up the mountain. More than just competent, Edison was unshakably positive, friendly, and accommodating at every turn - including some very early mornings and unforeseen delays. We hiked the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Abel followed by the mind blowing and gut turning Huayna Picchu extension as well. (The stairs of death are real. Be prepared and be focused but it's so worth it and totally feasible.) By the end of the second day we almost forgot that we were trekking with a travel company and it genuinely felt like we were just hanging out with friends for a few days of hiking - I kid you not. The Rainbow Mountain trip specifically is a fairly involved endeavor and requires a three hour microbus ride through paved and unpaved roads, community checkpoints, and, in places, the inevitable crowds, swarming altitude signposts for photos on the summit. Navigating this business requires time, money, and planning so it was reassuring to have a solid guide on our team to get it all done. We hiked this as a circuit and it was incredible. Moreover, at 5000+ meters, Vinicunca is not to be sneezed at. Physical conditioning helps, but so does experience and a positive attitude. In our case, our guide, Abel, brought emergency oxygen and a finger tip heart rate monitor to check our status on the way up. (I can proudly report that we hiked at a decent heartrate of 84 over 102 safely and without need of assistance or oxygen. I actually enjoy this kind of challenge so we were laughing and chatting pretty much the whole way up.) If you're an independent soul - and I suspect that you are since you're reading reviews and doing the work - you're probably already thinking of going it alone to avoid the cost of booking with a large company offering group tours with matching t-shirts as promoted on their elaborate websites. While that scenario obviously isn't necessary and likely isn't your preference, I don't recommend just winging it and improvising your trip after arrival in Cusco either. First, organizing the trip yourself will have its obvious downsides. With numerous permits, reservations, and transportation details to manage, you'll be focused on details rather than the country you travelled so far to explore. Hiring a guide will let you enjoy learning about the landscapes and people around you with your mind in the moment. Plus, you'll only save marginally on the cost of transportation and accommodations if you go solo, all the while struggling with the details and timing. At some point, you'll have to pay fees so you might as well let someone who knows what they're doing arrange it for you. So, the question becomes: do you sacrifice your time by attempting it on your own or are you willing to give up a sense of independence with a big tour company? Sparrow is the great solution to this dilemma. In our case, they coordinated a customized itinerary for us that perfectly suited our needs and budget using a tailor-made approach. I absolutely loved the plan they put together and the overall experience never once made us feel disconnected from the country and people. We never felt that we were intruding or being unsafe. Finally, no matter what your experience level may be, you'll need to get organised early since permits for the Inca Trail are limited. Sparrow will take care of this for you if you contact them with sufficient notice. Planning is key to ensure peace of mind. (For additional perspective on my recommendation posted here, I'll add humbly that I'm not new at this type of travel. I have had the privilege of hiking in several countries over the past thirty years and at many levels of difficulty ranging from walks and scrambles in the Tatras and the Atlas to more challenging treks at higher altitudes in the Alborz and the Himalaya. By comparison, our day hike in the Andes with Abel turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable outdoor experiences of my life and I was so happy to have shared this with my family in the company of an expert guide.) Beyond the mountains themselves, we learned so much about the cultural and material history of the archeological sites we visited thanks to our guide. The stories from the past were always balanced with a sensitive eye for daily life in Peru today. The locations we visited were described with clarity, compassion, insight, and respect. You'll be in good hands in this department for sure. Bottom line: I highly recommend Sparrow and suggest you contact them first. Enjoy your life and enjoy your time in Peru.
