Not the Provence Wine Tour We Imagined
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: THIS IS NOT THE PROVENCE WINE TOUR YOU’RE IMAGINING. If you’re picturing an afternoon exploring the beautiful vineyards of the Rhône Valley, meeting passionate winemakers, enjoying breathtaking views, and perhaps lingering over a glass of wine with bread and cheese while taking in the splendors of Provence, THIS IS NOT THE TOUR FOR YOU. I booked this five-hour tour for myself and five family members, and frankly, I was embarrassed by what we received for over $100 per person. The Viator listing advertises visits to three wineries with “expert-led wine tastings.” What it doesn’t tell you is that those “wineries” may actually be a roadside wine store, someone’s cluttered garage, and an industrial barn. We had no idea until we arrived at each location. FIVE HOURS. THREE TASTING STOPS. NOT ONE PICTURESQUE WINERY. Our guide, Anne, was extremely knowledgeable about the Rhône Valley, its terroir, grape varietals, and winemaking traditions. She spent much of our initial 45-minute drive explaining what makes the region’s Cru wines special. Unfortunately, that drive was arguably the highlight of our wine education. STOP #1: A WINE STORE NEXT TO A HIGHWAY. After driving 45 minutes through one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions, our first destination was… a retail wine store alongside a highway. Not a vineyard. Not a château. Not even a winery. A young employee poured our tastings but offered virtually no explanation or interaction. There were no vineyards to explore, no winemakers to meet, and nothing resembling the “expert-led wine tasting” advertised. What made this especially baffling was the route. We drove 45 minutes to reach a wine store, only to seemingly begin backtracking toward our subsequent stops. Why spend so much of a five-hour wine tour driving out of the way to visit a retail shop? STOP #2: SOMEONE’S GARAGE. After another 30-minute drive, we arrived at a cluttered industrial garage filled with folding tables, miscellaneous equipment, and a forklift. I’ve attached a photo because words don’t do it justice. The woman hosting us was very sweet, and the wine was good, but the surroundings were shockingly poor. No grounds to explore, no scenery to enjoy, and not even a bathroom for guests. STOP #3: ANOTHER INDUSTRIAL BUILDING. Our final tasting took place in yet another barn-like industrial space. The host offered an optional €7-per-person “cheese tasting,” which amounted to roughly three wedges of Camembert and two sliced baguettes shared among approximately 16 people. Again, no public bathroom, although the host kindly allowed some guests to use one inside his private home, separated from the living area by a curtain. THE MOST FRUSTRATING PART? We briefly stopped near the château in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for about 10 minutes to take pictures. Later, Anne pulled over so we could admire a gorgeous hilltop winery with a restaurant inside a castle. It was exactly the sort of picturesque destination we’d imagined visiting. We stood in the driveway, took pictures, and got back in the van. Everyone was thinking the same thing: WHY AREN’T WE GOING THERE?! Anne explained that she prefers supporting small, family-owned wineries over large corporate operations. I appreciate that philosophy, but surely there are independent vineyards in Provence with beautiful grounds, authentic tasting rooms, or even a pleasant outdoor space? And our first stop was a retail wine store, so that explanation didn’t entirely hold up. THE BOTTOM LINE: Anne was knowledgeable, the hosts were friendly, and some of the wines were excellent. But the experience was nothing like what I believed I was purchasing. What shocked me most was how little of this FIVE-HOUR wine tour involved actually experiencing wineries or vineyards. We spent an enormous amount of time driving between three underwhelming tasting locations, with brief roadside stops to photograph the beautiful places we weren’t actually visiting. We weren’t expecting luxury. We simply wanted to visit wineries, see vineyards, enjoy the scenery, and experience the beauty of Provence. I purchased this tour as a special gift for five family members, and I was genuinely embarrassed by the experience. If your only priority is sampling Rhône Valley wines and learning about the region during the drive, this tour may offer some value. But if you’re expecting the beautiful, immersive Provence winery experience the listing suggests, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. The Rhône Valley is spectacular. Unfortunately, this tour did very little to let us experience it.

We had three different tastings in three different settings. We enjoyed all of the wines and learned a lot about wine from the wineries and our guide Natalie. She was very pleasant and had a wealth of knowledge about wine and the area. I would highly recommend this tour.

Interesting afternoon! Great guide
Natalie is very knowledgeable and pleasant and I highly recommend her. The first two wineries were exceptional venues. The third was dirty and could be omitted and it would have cut the tour by an hour, which would have been fine. Or clean up the dust and cobwebs please! I would also suggest serving crackers or something during the second tasting. Another approach would be to let people know that they should bring a few snacks as by 5:30 or 6 my wife and I would have appreciated some food.

Great experience for wine lovers
Great experience if you want to try a selection of wines from the famous regions of Chateauneuf du Pape and Gigondas without the neccesity of driving. We visited 1 small independent winemaker and then 2 bigger wineries. The length of the trip was just as advertised, we got back to Avignon about 5 minutes before the expected time. Our guide had very good knowledge about the wines and regions we were about to visit and gave us a lot of information during the drive. Although, she's very strict about the timeschedule, so be sure to be at the pick up point on time :) Overall, we were extremely satisfied with the trip and would definitely recommend it to any wine enthusiast.
