About this experience

A canoe makes no noise. That is the whole point of this tour. Instead of a motor, you paddle the mangrove channels of the Las Baulas estuary at Playa Grande, and the wildlife stays where it is: migratory and resident birds, iguanas, coatis, raccoons, and howler monkeys in the branches above the water. Three hours on the water, three people to a canoe, with a guide trained by us who knows this estuary and its birds. Halfway through we leave the canoes for a short walk into the forest to look for the howlers, then paddle back. Private group only — you never share the canoes with strangers.

Wildlife Estuary Canoe Trip

We are a friends group of 4 couples so we were in 4 canoes. It was a beautiful early morning trip. Our guide, Jonathan, was amazing. He was very informative about the estuary habitat. I don’t know how he spotted so many birds, insects, crabs, and even 2 crocodiles. And he knew all their names in Spanish and English. He knew which birdsong belonged to which bird. He explained that the clicking sound belonged to clams opening and closing. I’m not exaggerating when I say that he spotted a hummingbird like 20 yards away. Then the highlight, the monkeys. We kept hearing the Howler monkeys. He took us to a place to get out of the canoes and view the monkeys. We were standing directly underneath them, and viewed a group with several babies. Sooo cute! Then Jonathan gave a Howler call and the leader of the group howled back! Excellent tour!

Wonderful guided canoe tour!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our tours of the estuary with experienced naturalist Jonathan. We’ve taken family and friends on three different occasions over our last two visits to Playa Grande, and have seen a wide variety of wildlife up close due to the quiet nature of the canoes—monkeys, bats, crocodiles, land crabs, raccoons, fish, a wide variety of birds and more. With Jonathan’s guidance, this excursion is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Playa Hermosa?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Playa Hermosa?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
