Beautiful Afternoon / Evening at Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall
We visited Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall in the afternoon / evening after our tour of Mutianyu Great Wall in the morning. Linda helped arrange everything perfectly for the whole day. Gubei Water Town was beautiful, with its charming streets, canals and evening atmosphere. John Woo, our driver for the day, stayed with us throughout and was patient, helpful and never rushed us. He also took us to a fantastic spot to see the lights on the Simatai Great Wall. The Great Wall looked absolutely stunning at night and was one of the most memorable sights of our trip. We had an excellent day and would highly recommend Linda and John.

Greatest Great Wall Watertown
Amazing little trip! Our driver was safe, speedy, and polite. He gave us good travel advice and some excellent suggestions for eating dinner after the trip. Gubei Wtown as they call themselves in English, was absolutely delightful. As a resort styled after an ancient town, it was convenient, charming, and peppered with cats and cat drawings. Included in that is a giant balloon of a drunken cat that fell asleep on a wall, pretty funny! The Simatai Great Wall area was just awesome, in the most literal sense of the word. The cable car ride up is a great view, and once you reach the wall you feel like you’re at the top of the Earth. The sense of the windswept peace and heavy history is a mood one must experience to appreciate. Overall, fantastic, strong 5/5.

A Once-in-a lifetime in Jinshanling, Gubei Watertown, Simatai Great Wall Experience - Thanks to Mary, the Guide who made it Epic! I rarely write reviews, but what Mary gave me and my husband was so extraordinary that ot deserves every word. This was our first difficult hike in Beijing/ Hebei and we had no idea what to expect. From the moment we stepped into the vehicle, Mary set the tone for the day - she made sure we were comfortable, checked that the seat massage was working and helped us settle in for a long day drive. It was such a small detail, but it showed how much she genuinely cared about our comfort. When we arrived at Jinshanling Great Wall, Mary transformed the experience from a simple hike into a journey through time. She explained the extensive history of the Wall, the dynasties responsible for the section, the purpose behind every beacon and watch tower. She pointed out restored versus unrestored areas and helping us appreciate the raw authenticity of the ancient stones beneath our feet. Before we started, she gave us a clear breakdown of the kilometers ahead, the steep sections, and what to expect at each stage. That preparation alone make the hike feel less intimidating. But what truly, and moved me was how she helped me faced my fear of heights. Some parts of Jinshanling are incredibly steep and she noticed my hesitation immediately. She offered strategies, paced me through the tough climbs and kept reassuring me that I could do it. Her confidence in me slowly became my own. Because of her, I conquered sections I never imagined I would be brave enough to attempt. And she didn't just guide, she elevated the entire experience. She prepared a picnic lunch for us to enjoy during the hike, encouraged us to pause and take in the sweeping views, and helped us capture stunning photos, always mindful of the best angles and lightning. These photos are now some of our most treasured memories. Even when she injured herself along the way, she pushed through with unbelievers energy and positivity. She never once let it affect the experience. She was transparent, attentive, and gave us a level of VIP treatment we never expected. After Jinshanling, the day continued to unfold like a dream. We strolled through Gubei Watertown, mesmerized by its beauty, culture and charm - from its origins to its lifestyle to the food we sampled along the way, Mary shared insights, and little details that made the town come alive. Then come our second hike of the day, Simatai Great Wall, illuminated at night and overlooking the glowing town below. Seeing Simatai after Jinshanling gave us a deeper contrast - rugged history by day,magical serenity by night. Mary didn't just guide us, she connected with us. She showed genuine interest in our interests, tailored the experience to what mattered to us, and proved that she is the real deal - A guide with passion heart, and unmatched dedication. We are truly greatful our path crossed. This wasn't just a tour. It was an epic day, a personal milestone, and an experience that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Enjoyable experience and good exercise!
We had a private tour and didn't realise the price did not include entrance fees - no point in going all that way if you were not going in!!?? It was an interesting place - looked totally refurbished if you can imagine that happening to a whole village! Glad the cable car took you 3/4 of the way up to the great wall leaving a good 200 crazy paving steps up to the wall itself so not for the inferm or faint hearted. Worth it at the top as great views .
