Glowing about the worms
Wonderful private cave. Need to be able to walk up 150 stairs as there are no elevators. Tour guide was absolutely fabulous and did not rush the tour and provided ample time for pictures. Highly recommended! Tour finished with some wonderful Kawa Kawa tea. Your Max is 10.

Great caves but just a driver
The caves are incredible and worth the 2.5 hour drive from Auckland. As for Private tour, our driver was a very safe and provided bathroom stops but was not really a guide. He didn’t talk the entire time unless we asked a question. We wanted to know more about Auckland, the land, etc. We told him we were only here in transit once before. A usual private guide will tell you everything about an area or country. He was a driver.
Response from the operator: Hello, Thank you for the time in providing your feedback. All our team are driver/guides and have noted your feedback re having a driver that is more communicative and providing additional inputs on the area you are travelling through. We are disappointed, that you did not find the service up to your expectations, and will work to having this incorporated to ensure a better experience. Kind Regards, Legend Team

Fabulous caves, disappointing journey
The glow worm caves are not to be missed--an extraordinary experience. However, be advised that it's a 2 hour 20 minute drive from Auckland to the caves and even longer back (because of Auckland traffic) for an hour in the cavern. Our main complaint is that our guide/driver was a competent driver, but not a guide at all...in fact, she had never toured the caves. Her accent was very thick, making her hard to understand, and if you were in the back of the van you couldn't hear her anyway. This would have been a wonderful opportunity to learn about the countryside of New Zealand with the right person to explain it. If all you want is a ride to the caves from Auckland, there's probably a cheaper way to get there.
Response from the operator: Hello Ruth, Thank you for the time in sharing your feedback. Your driver/ guide is quite experienced and been to Waitomo a number of times amongst other sights in New Zealand. Your comment, re more information on the countryside is well noted and we will endeavor to incorporate the same and appreciate the feedback re being unable to hear at the back of the mini van especially with 6 people on board. Kind Regards, Legend Team

Caves
The trip was not well organized. We had to wait 2 hours for our pick up. Even though the driver was a very friendly guy. It's much easier to buy tickets at the spot and drive there with your own car.
Response from the operator: Hello Armenak, Thanks for your feedback. We have over the years conducted many tours and these have gone without hiccups. On your tour, early in the morning we had a mechanical issue with a vehicle and this caused the initial delay. Then we had as per our communication, pick up planned from Crowne Plaza, and in your communication you requested the driver come to Hilton - as you had moved there. This, created another delay, as Hilton is on Princes Wharf and with a cruise ship there we needed to get access to the wharf at a very busy time - which was not prebooked. Coupled with this, the delay meant, that your entrance to Waitomo (which as advised was fully sold out) had to be changed with the venue to ensure you got access after the drive there - which as you can appreciate created another delay. Whilst, we understand and appreciate that this was not your fault, but as you can understand, it was not due to our not wanting you to have a great day out - we did all that was possible to ensure you got to visit the caves. We thank you for your feedback and wish you safe travels.

Why this scores 49
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland cost?
+
Prices start at $297 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland take?
+
Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 49 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.5/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Tour: Waitomo Caves Day Trip from Auckland start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
