About this experience
**Private Guided Jeep Tour: Scotino Cave & Lasithi Plateau Adventure (Half-Day)** This itinerary takes you off the postcard and into the folds of Crete’s ancient breath — a route where myth and memory still hang in the air like morning mist. From the quiet village of Prassas, visiting a family-run olive mill to the mystical Skotino Cave, you’re walking the line between Minoan echoes and modern simplicity. Skotino isn’t just another cave — it’s a forgotten shrine, humming with untold stories. Then, as the altitude climbs, so does the soul. The Lasithi Plateau opens up like a lost valley, where the old windmills still whisper to the gods. Krasi, the final stop, wraps things up under the shade of its thousand-year-old plane tree — a symbol of time well spent. What makes this route unique? It’s not a race through landmarks; it’s a slow dance with Crete’s untouched character.

Discover Diktaion Andron, the legendary Cave of Zeus, hidden above the village of Psychro on the Lasithi Plateau. According to ancient mythology, the goddess Rhea brought the newborn Zeus here to protect him from Cronus, making the cave one of Crete’s most important sacred and mythological sites. Visitors can descend into its impressive underground chambers, admire the stalactites, stalagmites and dramatic rock formations, and step into a world where history, nature and legend meet. Archaeological discoveries show that the cave was used for religious ceremonies for many centuries, while its mysterious atmosphere makes it an exciting experience for both adults and children.

This tour promised a...
This tour promised a scenic exploration of the Lasithi region, including a cave visit. While the natural beauty of the area is undeniable, the overall experience felt underwhelming, primarily due to a significant lack of guidance and an itinerary heavily weighted towards driving. Our driver was undoubtedly safe and careful, a reassuring quality given the narrow and winding mountain roads. However, her role as a guide was severely lacking. Throughout the entire four-hour duration, we received hardly any information about the places we were seeing or the region's history and culture. This absence of commentary left us feeling disconnected from the landscape we were traversing. The itinerary itself felt unbalanced. The majority of the time was spent driving, with the actual stops being incredibly brief. The "visit" to the Lasithi Plateau amounted to a mere one-minute photo opportunity from the side of the road. Similarly, the stop at the old plane tree was a fleeting five minutes. The highlight, or what should have been, was the visit to Skotino Cave. However, this too was disappointing. Our guide actively discouraged us from entering, and the allotted time was a mere fifteen minutes. Despite her reluctance, we chose to explore the cave briefly. It's important to note that Skotino Cave is not developed for tourism; there are no walkways, and accessible exploration is limited to less than 100 meters. While the natural formations were interesting, the rushed nature of the stop and the guide's discouraging attitude diminished the experience. While the views during the scenic drive were undeniably beautiful, the lack of context and the fleeting nature of the stops left us feeling like our day was largely wasted. We spent the majority of the tour in transit with minimal engagement or information provided. In conclusion, while the Lasithi region offers stunning scenery, this particular Viator tour falls short due to the absence of meaningful guidance and an itinerary that prioritizes driving over exploration. If you're looking for an in-depth experience with insightful commentary, this tour is likely not the right choice.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your detailed review. We sincerely regret that the tour didn’t meet your expectations, particularly regarding guidance and itinerary balance. Your feedback about the lack of commentary and rushed stops is invaluable—we’re reviewing our training and scheduling to improve engagement and time allocation. We’ll also reassess how we present Skotino Cave to set clearer expectations. While we’re glad you appreciated the scenic beauty, we’ll strive to make the experience more immersive.

Fun Trip
Great driver with extensive local knowledge. Good stops along the route to and from the caves. Need to be reasonably fit to access the caves.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the Jeep tour and appreciated your driver's local knowledge. It's great to know the stops along the route were enjoyable and that you found the experience fun. We agree that a reasonable level of fitness is helpful for accessing the caves, and we appreciate your note. We hope to see you again on another adventure!

Private Tour
We were not picked up in a jeep, but in a limousine. Perfect as there were two of us. I can highly recommend this service. It is easier and better to see all the sights. If you book 2 private tours you get a 25% discount

5 Star tour operator
First let me say that this tour company is amazing even though we didn’t do the tour. This was a last minute replacement for a different tour that was canceled by a different operator and I booked this tour from the wrong port. The driver called me right away when he couldn’t find me. That’s when we realized we were at two different places. I took full responsibility for the mixup and they still refunded my excursion even though they had no obligation to do so. Can’t wait to book with them again when we visit Crete next year.
Response from the operator: Hello there! We're delighted to hear about your experience, and we genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. It's moments like these that motivate us to continually strive for excellence in providing memorable travel experiences. We understand that mix-ups can happen, and we're just glad we could assist and make things right for you. Our team is dedicated to ensuring our customers feel supported and valued throughout their journeys. Knowing that you're looking forward to booking with us again for your next visit to Crete warms our hearts, and we can't wait to welcome you back. If you have any specific preferences or plans for your next trip, feel free to share them with us. We're here to make your future travels in Crete as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Safe travels, and we look forward to hosting you again!

Great half day tour - recommended
Excellent half day tour. Tony collected us from our hotel in a comfortable SUV. Tony was friendly, gave us some nuggets of information on the way and at each stop. He also answered any questions we had on the way. We first stopped at an olive oil factory. This was very interesting, you could taste the different types of olive oil and purchase some if you like but no obligation. Then to the top of mou Lorain with great views, saw a 3,000 year old tree, Monastery, zeus cave (worth a visit) then on way back showed us the resouvour for Heraklion which was at 15% level given the warm weather if late. We both really enjoyed this tour and would recommend it if you want a taste of just outside Heraklion!
Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the half-day tour! We're thrilled to hear that Tony provided excellent service, collecting you in a comfortable SUV and offering friendly and informative commentary throughout the journey. Visiting the olive oil factory sounds like a fascinating experience, with the opportunity to taste different types of olive oil and learn about the production process. Exploring the top of Mou Lorain, discovering a 3,000-year-old tree, visiting the Monastery and Zeus Cave, and enjoying the views must have made for a memorable and enriching tour. We appreciate your recommendation and are glad to know that you both thoroughly enjoyed the tour. If you ever plan to explore more of Crete or have any other travel plans, feel free to reach out. We'd love to assist you in creating more fantastic and insightful experiences. Safe travels!
