The tour that never was.
I would have liked the chance to review this tour as we were so looking forward to being shown all the amazing 'out of the way' sights of Grand Teton by an expert guide who would know the best places to look for the wildlife we had come to see. We had paid through Trip Advisor for this tour and had some sporadic communication with Obsidian before we left for our holiday. We arrived at Grand Teton, eagerly speculating where our guide would take us and what animals we might see. Unfortunately, the day before we were due to undertake the tour, we had a message from Trip Advisor. 'Its a bummer, but your tour operator has cancelled your trip'. That was it! Nothing from Obsidian Expeditions. I messaged them through Trip Advisor and received a reply saying that our guide had cancelled his tours from 30 June to 4 July. No explanation or apology. We were so very disappointed and obviously it was too late to try to book an alternative tour. We love Grand Teton and will hopefully return, but we won't be booking any tours with Obsidian again.

As much as we love leading guests on unforgettable tours of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the cost of doing business here is steep—both literally and figuratively. The nature of guiding in Yellowstone demands more than just a love for the outdoors. Our guides are not only knowledgeable about the region's complex geology, wildlife, and cultural history, but they're also skilled drivers who safely navigate oversized vehicles through unpredictable weather, avoiding inattentive drivers and around 2,000-pound bison. We insist on high standards because we care deeply about the safety and experience of our guests. This level of expertise comes at a cost, especially when you factor in the sky-high living expenses in Jackson. We also take pride in ensuring our guides have stable living conditions, which is increasingly difficult in a town where housing is scarce and expensive. We believe that well-rested guides make for safer, more enjoyable tours. This commitment to our staff means we often pay above-market rates to ensure they don't have to juggle multiple jobs just to afford rent. Our challenges extend beyond high costs and staffing issues. We also contend with natural disasters that can severely impact our business. Recently, a landslide cut off the main artery between Idaho and Wyoming, drastically increasing the commute time for some of our guides who live in Idaho because they can't afford to live in Jackson. What was once a manageable 45-minute commute (one-way) ballooned to 2.5 hours, making it unsustainable. We're still working to determine the full financial impact of these events, but the strain on our operations is undeniable. That said, we occasionally face staffing challenges, which can lead to the unfortunate necessity of canceling tours. When a tour is booked through an online travel agent (OTA) like TripAdvisor, which takes a hefty commission, the margins become razor-thin, limiting our flexibility to find last-minute replacements if a guide falls ill or unexpectedly leaves town. While we often partner with other guide services who can step in to lead a tour, they are less likely to do so when the tour has already been heavily discounted due to the OTA commission. This is why we encourage direct bookings through our website—it allows us to serve our guests better and ensure a smooth experience from start to finish. In addition to increased food and fuel costs, we've also faced significant hikes in our commercial auto insurance premiums in recent years despite our safe driving record. We hope you can appreciate the fine balance we must strike between offering an extraordinary experience and managing the very real costs of doing business in such a remarkable place. One of the best tours that I have ever taken.
Natalie was our guide and she was very professional, personal, and knowledgeable about the park. She picked us up promptly and drove us all over the park showing us various areas of interest. Breakfast and lunch was included in the tour. She is also a professional photographer so she was very helpful in picking spots for us to photograph. This is probably one of the best tours I have ever taken. I recommend it without reservation.

Amazing Tour
We had a fabulous tour with our guide Ted Jackson. The scenery and animals were amazing and breathtaking. He was very accommodating in stopping to photograph every animal we spotted and every view we wanted to capture. His scope for the camera was excellent and provided us with wonderful photos. We can’t wait to come back and use this great tour company and guide. This was certainly a bucket list vacation!

Amazing! Must do.
I cannot give a high enough recommendation. Stacie and his wife are a one stop shop. They are kind and go over and beyond to make your vacation perfect. We did two tours with him and both were amazing. We had a 10 and 14 year old in tow and he kept it fun, kept them interested and was always open to any ideas or requests we had. He is a plethora of knowledge on the parks, the area and he even advised us on where to eat for the foods we were looking for as well as helped connect us with private ski lessons on our last minute trip. This was money well spent and if you are planning a trip for this area reach out to him, he will go above and help you with anything and everything and his tours are amazing!
