About this experience

Herculaneum was an ancient roman colony, buried under the same eruption of Mount Vesuvius that damaged Pompei in 79 A. D. The archeological area is not completely escavated, but in its small dimensions it's rich in historical heritage and unique archeological findings. Objects from the past like food, clothes, bones and wooden furniture are in a perfect state of conservation here, thanks to the particular kind of volcanic material that became stratified on the area. The guide will show you the ancient beach, the skeletons, the houses, the villas, the shops, the bath houses, the gardens and much more to discover the ancient Romans' daily life.

Truly excellent and interesting guide.

Roberta was a truly excellent guide. She messaged us in advance so we had her contact details and could arrange a smooth meeting. Her knowledge of Herculaneum was second to none and she ‘told the story’ in a really fascinating way, not just trotting out the facts. Her English was excellent and she was able to answer all our (numerous!) questions.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much!! See you next time!

Herculaneum and Roberta the perfect combination

Wow, what an experience. I'll be honest — I hadn't heard much about Herculaneum before my wife suggested the excursion and booked it. But she insisted it would be as interesting as our outing to Pompeii, a lifelong bucket list item for me. Needless to say (so I'll say it anyway), my wife was right. My camera is filled with amazing images of life in an ancient coastal village: the public squares, beautiful bath houses and, yes, the piles of bones from people who desperately tried to escape. That alone would have been an amazing experience. But the part that sticks with us is our guide, Roberta Avilia, who so effortlessly led us through the ruins with compelling insights, fascinating asides and a keen sense of pacing. Never once did it feel like she was reciting a script or keeping to a routine. Roberta's affinity for the ruins, its people and its history were abundantly clear. Her ability to bring it all to life was extraordinary. Herculaneum may not be what brings you to this part of Italy, but it will be a huge part of what you remember — especially if you are fortunate enough to hire Roberta.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for these fascinating words!

Story telling and historical detail done very well !

Roberta was very knowledgeable about the history of Herculaneum and the events of 79AD. Her delivery program and style set the scene nicely, and she has a very engaging and warm manner about here.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much! Hope to see you and your family next time!

A Wonderful Experience with Roberta

Roberta was wonderful! Extremely knowledgable and brought Herculaneum to life. I would highly recommend this tour and Roberta. We took the private tour with Roberta and started early when the park opened, which was comfortable in August when it gets very hot as the day goes on. All was great and very pleased with everything.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much! Hope to see you and your wife soon again!

Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Naples.

How much does Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide cost?

+

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Naples usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide take?

+

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Naples is not rushed.

Is Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 80 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 40 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Naples, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide?

+

Around 14 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Naples can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Naples and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Tour in Herculaneum with an authorized guide start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Naples within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Naples?

+

On Outty we rank every Naples experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Private Amalfi Coast Tour from Sorrento/Naples/Salerno, Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens Small Group Tour with Shuttle, Naples Pizza and Tiramisu Cooking Class. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Naples?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Naples?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
