Unforgettable hike from the wild wall to Mutianyu

We wanted to hike on the wild wall to have a more peaceful experience of the Great Wall. We contacted John (hereisbeijing.com) via WeChat, and after a short while we had agreed on the pickup - he even suggested to combine the trip with another traveller and save a bit of money. To prepare for the heat, he suggested to start already at 5:30, which suited us perfectly. John picked us up at our hostel in BJ and gave the opportunity to have breakfast and shop snacks on the way. He had excellent and very thorough instructions for how to get to the wall on the Jiankou (the wild side) and what to expect there, and prepared us with water for the way. After our hike, he picked us up on the Mutianyu with very flexible schedule, allowing us to enjoy the wall without rush. We absolutely loved the hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu and John made the way hassle-free. We can warm-heartedly recommend John in case you want an easy, friendly, flexible, and organized drive to the wall and back!

Best day ever because of John from Hereisbeijing.com

We booked a trip to see the Great Wall, but wanted to see some of the wild wall, not just the restored wall. John picked us up at our hotel in Beijing and brought us to a little village, where we hiked up to one of the towers. This was an experience of a lifetime. We hiked for about an hour, then had to climb up onto one of the towers. We started our hike on a portion of the wall where we were the only people around for miles. We hiked for about 2 hours before we even saw anyone. While eating lunch we finally saw some people. We made it to the restored wall in about 3 hours. The restored wall is beautiful, but the wild wall is a breath-taking experience. We finished out day by taking the toboggan down to the bottom. John from HereisBeijing gave us a fabulous day. He provided gloves, as it was quite cold, and some walking sticks. If you are up for a day of adventure and an amazing hike, contact John. I never write reviews, but this one is worth writing about!

    +

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

    +

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
