About this experience
Here’s a great tour combination for you, Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour! First, a car, van, or minibus will take you to the remains of the ancient Salona, where you will gaze upon the ruins of a once great Roman city. It was founded after the Roman civil war under Julius Caesar and it was a striving town, three times bigger than Pompeii. Today, Solin is a beautiful town, popular with both locals and tourists. Afterward, you will visit the Fortress of Klis, a fort with the best view of Split and the surrounding areas. With a history of more than 2000 years, it started as an Illyrian tribe called Dalmatae that used it as a stronghold before it was occupied by the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the site became a seat for Croatian kings. The famous series Game Of Thrones was filmed there, so if you are a fan, this is a must!

Wonderful private tour
We had an excellent morning exploring Klis and Salona with Mario. He was a terrific guide, knowledgeable and attentive. Kilos is an incredible fortress and well worth the visit. Salona was very interesting. Mario brought the history to life - amazing!

Hassle free Kliss fortress and Salona guide!
Fantastic half day trip to salona and klis fortress. Mario was extremely knowledgeable and catered to our requests without hesitation. We were more interested in the history side of things and boy did we learn a lot. If you are looking for a super easy and smooth half day trip without worrying about crowds, this will be your kinda tour. Highlight was wearing some of the armour and the views from the fortress. Punctual, clean car, smooth ride and a super easy day considering what you see.

Informative, Fun and Adaptable
Mario was very informative with the history of Split and relayed this in a fun story that my 13 year old really enjoyed. Very flexible and adaptable to the pouring rain. Thanks.. we certainly need to return to learn and enjoy so much more.

Salona & Klis - unmissable combo
Our guide Marija was an extremely kind and highly knowledgeable History graduate. Local to Split with specialised knowledge. She put my 15 year old at ease and she was very easy to talk to. Bonus common sense approach that during a heatwave Marija swapped the program to start at Klis (rather than Salona) to get there early in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat. Both sites incredible if you like classical civilisation. We visited in early July and had both places to almost ourselves. We like walking but took advantage of being able to jump in the air-con van to get from the main Salona site to the amphitheater (it would have been 20 mins there and 20 mins back in 30+ degree Celsius). It was not our reason for visiting but if you’re a Game of Thrones fan - then you’ll be extra excited to have visited the Klis Fortress. Salona is like a mini Pompeii with just as much cultural significance.

Stunning Klis Fortress and Roman ruins
Mario was a wonderful guide and really knew the history of the area. He answered all our questions and was very patient with us. He really took his time. We never felt rushed. The van was very comfortable and clean. We would definitely recommend and hope we can take another tour with him in the future.

Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Split.
How much does Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split cost?
+
Prices start at $207 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Split usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split take?
+
Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Split is not rushed.
Is Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Split, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Split can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Split and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Salona and Fortress of Klis Tour from Split start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Split within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Split?
+
On Outty we rank every Split experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Split Small-Group Walking Tour with a Magister of History, Split Walking Tour with Professor of History, From Split: Krka Waterfalls, Food & Wine Tasting Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Split?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Split?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
