We start the day with a drive from Reykjavík to the mall town of Borgarnes (about 1.5 hours drive). The area is a setting for large parts of one of the best known sagas, Egil's Saga, and at The Settlement Center there are two exhibitions, one is about the first settlers of Iceland that arrived here as a part of the viking expansion into Europe, the other is dedicated to the great viking warrior poet Egil Skallagrímsson.

Djupalonssandur Beach
From Lóndrangar we continue for another 15 minutes to reach Djúpalónssandur Beach. For centuries in the past farmers came here in winter to work on boats sailing out from the rugged volcanic coastline to the rich fishing grounds just off land. The massive lava flow that stopped here sometime in the distant past created a natural shelter where they set up camp. A reminder of these harsh times are four heavy rocks of different sizes which decided how much any individual got paid at the end of the season; a tenth, a quart, half or full pay, all depending on the weight they could lift after a journey that often took days over rugged terrain in the middle of winter. A trawler ran aground here in 1948 and has been disintegrating slowly since then leaving chunks of rusted iron the beach making this place the most extensive natural art installation in Iceland.

Kirkjufell Mountain
From Djúpalónssandur Beach we travel around the Peninsula, passing several fishing villages (about 2 hour drive with several small stops to take pictures). Named the church mountain this is a place that reminds us of Iceland ́s rich folklore and many myths. The first settlers most likely saw the mountain as some sort of a place of worship from either trolls or elves or even some other entities they thought were hanging out in the area. From Kirkjufell we go back to Reykjavík (about 2.5 hour drive).

Spectacular Views and Surreal Landcape in the Snaefellsness Peninsula
My family of 8 adults and 2 young children decided to to experience the Snæfellsnes Peninsula using the Snæland private driver service so that we could move at our own pace and have more control over spending time at certain stops that were more interesting to my family. It was a great decision because our driver, Tryggvi, was incredibly friendly and accommodating to all our requests. He gave us a rough estimate of how long we may be at each stop and helped us stay on track in order to see everything we desired during this very long day with many interesting destinations to explore, none of which charged admission. Our first stop was Ytri Tunga beach where we caught a glimpse of seals sunning on the rocks. There was not much more to do there, and the long line at the single porta potty took longer than our stroll on the rocky shore line. Our second stop was the most pleasant surprise of the day. I had thought about skipping Búðdakirkja, since it seemed a bit boring for my young grandsons and my adult children who were seeking more adventure, but the rolling fields of grass and moss covered lava in Búðir were breathtaking and peaceful and we loved exploring in every direction. After that our driver dropped us at the Arnastapi harbor and directed us on a 1.2 KM hike along the cliff edge to the monument of the mythical Bard of Snæfellsás where he planned to pick us up. The towering basalt cliffs, the soaring and singing birds, the arches and jagged rock formations, and the crashing waves created the most dramatic scenery and was the highlight of the day. We then visited the Djúpalónssandur Beach where we trekked through the rocky lava landscape until it opened up at the wide black pebble beach with waves pounding the rocky cliffs. Since we wanted to make sure we had enough time at Kirkufell for some hiking, we went directly there after the beach instead of stopping at any other places as we drove around Snæfellsjökull National Park. This stop was the biggest difference between expectation and reality. I think if we had a guide, we may have had a better idea of what we could do once we arrived at Kirkufell, but it was pretty surprising that it was just a short walk from the parking lot to the viewing area to see the mountain and waterfall with no obvious trail routes or places to explore off the designated path. This was disappointing to my adventure seekers. Some tried to climb directly up the front of the mountain, but it was too slippery, so we left that place in less time than we had allowed. The benefit of having a Snæland private driver came in handy, because we then went to the little harbor town of Grundarfjörður for an Icelandic hotdog and a coffee before heading back to Reykjavik. Despite being a little cool, it was not raining which made for a great day and was worth the 2 hour drive from Reykjavik so see such a spectacular region.
