Authentic Japanese experience
Aya gave us a truly special experience. The class took place in her home, which made it deeply meaningful for our family. Being welcomed into a traditional Japanese home added an authenticity we will never forget. She is a skilled and passionate teacher — clear in her instruction and encouraging throughout. What meant the most to us was how she recognized our son Max’s artistic ability and encouraged him. That moment alone made the experience priceless. Her English is excellent, which made communication easy and comfortable. We felt honored to learn from her and grateful for the opportunity to experience Japanese calligraphy in such an intimate and authentic setting. A memorable experience we will always cherish.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful review. It was truly a pleasure to welcome you and your family into our home. I am very happy to hear that the experience felt meaningful and authentic for you. Sharing Japanese culture in a traditional home setting is something very important to me, so your words mean a great deal. I was especially surprised by your son Max’s artistic ability. His sense of balance and expression was remarkable. Please encourage him to continue writing not only digitally but also with a brush after you return home. I truly believe his talent will continue to blossom. It was a joy to spend time with your family, and I feel honored that you chose to experience Japanese calligraphy with me. I hope the memories of your time in Kyoto stay with you for many years. Thank you again for visiting. I wish you and your family all the best. Warm regards, Aya

Wonderful Calligraphy Class in Kyoto
This calligraphy class was a great way to learn a bit about Japanese culture and practice our brush skills. The instructor was very welcoming, knowledgeable, and personable; she taught us about the evolution of calligraphy and gave clear, easy-to-follow instructions for drawing the characters we chose. After an hour spent learning and laughing, we were able to create our own personal calligraphy souvenirs from the class. We would definitely recommend this activity in Kyoto!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed the calligraphy class and learned more about the beauty and history of Japanese writing. It’s always my pleasure to share not only the techniques of brushwork but also the spirit and meaning behind this traditional art. I’m glad you could take home your own calligraphy as a special Kyoto memory — each piece reflects your focus and creativity. I hope to welcome you again to experience more of Japan’s cultural traditions such as tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arrangement), and art sushi roll classes at my home. Thank you for recommending my experiences to other travelers! Warm regards, Aya Sakura

Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kyoto.
How much does Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master cost?
+
Prices start at $15000 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kyoto usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master take?
+
Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kyoto is not rushed.
Is Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 43 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kyoto, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 13. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master?
+
Around 15 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kyoto can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kyoto and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Japanese Calligraphy in Kyoto – Learn Shodō with a Master start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kyoto within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kyoto?
+
On Outty we rank every Kyoto experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Kyoto : Gion Make Your Own Chopsticks with Engraving Option, Award-Winning Authentic Ramen Making Experience in Kyoto, Hidden Kyoto E-Biking tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kyoto?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kyoto?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
