White Tower of Thessaloniki
The White Tower, the monument - symbol of Thessaloniki that dominates the port, was built in the late 15th - early 16th century and was the southeastern tower of its fortification. In its historical course it changed names and uses. Kalamaria Fortress, Janissary Tower and Blood Tower were some of them, the last two due to the use of the Tower as a prison for prisoners executed by the Janissaries and its face was stained with blood from the frequent executions. In 1890 a convict, in order to gain his freedom, whitewashed the tower with lime and since then its current name has remained, "White Tower".

It was originally built in the ruins of a Roman bath, in the place where, according to tradition, the Saint was imprisoned and martyred in 303. The first temple, a small shrine, was built in 313. The holy place of martyrdom, the Crypt, is located below the transverse aisle of the church and in the late Byzantine years was the center of the myrrh-washing of the Saint.

The best way to see Thessaloniki
Vaso was our guide for the day. An archaeologist with an infectious passion for her home city of Thessaloniki. We visited every major site and were provided with intimate and detailed knowledge of their respective histories and significance to the city. Vaso was kind and a pleasure to be with. She even provided additional time toward the end of the tour to ensure we enjoyed ourselves even more. The pictures say it all. Ευχαριστούμε Βάσο. Να είσαι πάντα καλά. Thank you Demetrius for making Thessaloniki an amazing experience. The walking tour, despite the extreme heat, was awesome, engaging, filled with lots of laughter, and very informative. You were the absolute best guide! The cafe stop was a welcomed break from the heat(loved the Greek coffee), teaching us the meaning of the Greek gesture: ftou ftou ftou -😃, best gyros ever, moreover highlighting the points of interest/landmarks and providing a detailed history of your beloved Thessaloniki and its many levels. A job well done my friend! Thank you again for making our trip memorable and so special.

Our guide met us at the...
Our guide met us at the ship on time for our walking tour. He was knowledgeable and personable giving us historical and modern information about the city. He treated us to a couple of local specialties as we meandered through the city taking in its rich history. We did go to the Metro station to view the unearthed finds from antiquity. The Metro stop was probably my favorite, but we also went to a church built in the 500s. All in all a great tour and guide. I highly recommend!
