Then board a horse drawn carriage called ‘calesa’ and trot off to Chinatown in Binondo, crossing the Pasig River, and onto an alley that leads you to Binondo Church another historical landmark built by the Spaniards in 1596. Alight at the church’s entrance for a brief stop, and walk towards Ongpin, a street visible by its Chinese-style arches at its entrance. This narrow street leads to a network of alleys and side streets crammed with small shops, Chinese drugstores, restaurants and residential houses. Binondo’s commercial activity ranges from banks to retail and wholesale shops selling a variety of items, from Chinese curios and delicacies to textiles, jewelries and construction materials. A leisurely walk brings you to numerous gold jewelry shops at the other end of Ongpin, whereupon sits an old Spanish fountain near the entrance to Sta. Cruz Church. Stop briefly at St. Cruz Church which was built in 1608 by the Jesuit priests, then move on to Escolta, located a few blocks away. Steeped in history, it was once used as a convoy route by the British Navy from 1762 to 1764, and the shopping center of the elite during the Spanish and American regimes. Today, what is left of what was once known as the “Queen of Streets’ are two notable pre-World War II buildings, the Regina Building and the Perez-Samanillo Building. The former is of neo-Classical architecture while the latter, is of Philippine art deco architecture that was designed by Andres Luna de San Pedro, son of Juan Luna, considered the country’s greatest painter and creator of the ‘Spolarium’. Spend some time exploring the area before returning to your hotel.

Mala experiencia una estafa
Serious Warning: This property is NOT a 4 star hotel, as advertised on Trip.com and as its owners claim. In reality, it doesn’t even reach the level of a 2 star hotel. Its rating is fraudulent, and what they offer does not match the minimum standards of the category. It is a complete scam. Upon arrival, the hotel was already alarming. The exterior looks like a garage, and the lobby does not match the photos. During check in, a man stood next to the reception watching my luggage suspiciously, creating a sense of insecurity. When I opened the assigned room, I found a man sleeping in the bed. They had given me an occupied room. Reception claimed it appeared as vacant in their system, showing total mismanagement. The hallways have dirty, foul smelling carpet, and from the room you can clearly hear constant noise from other rooms, making it impossible to rest. The “new” room had no city view, but instead faced old, noisy, dirty air conditioning machines, visible through a window that seems never to have been cleaned. The curtains, wrinkled, old and low quality, let daylight in from early morning. The bathroom has been “renovated” by an amateur, with terrible workmanship, poorly sealed joints, uneven surfaces and finishes that wouldn’t be acceptable even in a cheap hostel. I had booked eight nights but had to leave on the second day due to the hotel’s unsanitary conditions. Service is practically nonexistent. Black Mold: a Serious Health Hazard The room had extreme humidity, noticeable when breathing, and patches of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) on the ceiling. This mold is toxic and poses a serious health risk, especially in closed, poorly ventilated spaces. Exposure to black mold can cause: • Irritation of eyes, skin and throat • Persistent cough, breathing difficulties and nasal congestion • Headaches and severe fatigue • Strong allergic reactions • Worsening of asthma and chronic respiratory issues • In prolonged exposure, respiratory infections and immune system impairment After two nights, my skin was irritated and itchy, a typical symptom of exposure to mold and excessive humidity. Additionally, there was rust on the air conditioning unit, damp sheets and dirt on the furniture, carpet, under the carpet and under the bed. The room is not cleaned properly. Misleading and Unsafe Facilities The “gym” is a tiny, unusable room with cramped machines and a sauna that overheats the space, making it impossible to exercise safely. Breakfast is terrible: incomplete dishes, a fried egg with black particles from a dirty griddle, and a ridiculous buffet consisting only of bad coffee, sliced bread, jam and butter. For dinner, a minor served my meal, and did so without cutlery, napkin, drink or table setting. I had to get everything myself. Impossible to Sleep The noise from the generator and the air conditioning machines makes it impossible to sleep. The generator at the entrance runs almost all night, producing constant, loud noise. Combined with the noise from other rooms, rest is simply impossible. Refund Denied and Fake Reviews I requested a refund for the remaining nights because what was advertised does not match reality. They refused, despite the unsanitary conditions. Many positive reviews appear fake, likely posted by the owners. Most have no text, and the negative reviews match my experience exactly. Conclusion Do not be fooled. This hotel is a SCAM, with black mold, lack of hygiene, extreme noise, an amateurishly renovated bathroom, nonexistent service and minors working. Many guests have had to leave for the same reasons. They know this and continue deceiving people.

Perfect Introduction to Manila in a Short Time
If you only have a short time in Manila, a private city tour is absolutely the way to go. Great Morning in Manila
Joan and Raul gave us a great private tour of Old Manila and Binondo. Raul was an excellent driver. The van was very clean and comfortable. Joan was a wealth of knowledge and had a great personality as well. We really felt that we learned a lot and saw a ton during our tour. Would highly recommend.

Philippine history made real in Manila
My guide Joan was knowledgable, intelligent, a great communicator and very good company. She imparted the information in a conversation rather than a lecture. We covered so much in the tour but it never felt rushed - Rizal, Intramuros, churches, important buildings and architecture, fantastic Spanish merchants house, horse and carriage, Chinatown, all great.
