Less traveled portion of the great wall, on a fantastic winter day

Bruce was knowledgeable and a good climber. The trip was one of the highlights for the three teenagers (all grew up in the US). The scenery was better than the popular Great Wall sites in that it is more "authentic" (many parts are not repaired so showing the rust and true history--warning: you need to be more careful as side walls are missing in some parts, so small children are not recommended on this trip). The hike is of appropriate length and difficulty (for teenagers and healthy people under 70). And on a clear winter day, our hike with Bruce was truely unforgettable. Thank you again Bruce!

We were a little sceptical about the...

We were a little sceptical about the crowds on the GWOC considering we visited during peak tourist season. However, since this section of the wall is a few hours away from the city, we were very pleased to not find any crowd at the wall during our hike.
The travel in and out of the city may be something you would want to factor, in case you have little time in the city. But if time is not an issue for you, it is totally worth opting for this tour. Our guide was very friendly and since we were 2 vegetarians in the group - she had taken care of making necessary dietary arrangements. Honestly one of the best tours we have done on Viator.
The scenery is just out of this world!!! Also there are umpteen options for photography without anyone photobombing your memories!!

Response from the operator: Dear Adwait, Thank you so much for your fantastic five-star review! We really appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your Great Wall tour experience. We’re so glad to hear that despite visiting during peak season, you avoided large crowds and enjoyed a peaceful hike—this section’s distance from the city really does make for a more relaxed experience. We also totally agree that the scenery is absolutely breathtaking, and it’s wonderful that you got to take plenty of perfect, unobstructed photos. It makes us happy that our friendly guide took great care of your group, especially with the special vegetarian dietary arrangements for two of you. We understand the travel time needs to be planned accordingly, but we’re thrilled you felt the tour was completely worth it. Thank you for rating this as one of your best Viator tours—your recommendation means a lot. We hope to have the chance to host you again on your future travels! Regards lily

While the drive from Beijing was...

While the drive from Beijing was long, the hike on the Great Wall was worth it. The view is absolutely beautiful and our group was so glad we were able to see the older, not reconstructed parts of the wall. The hike was difficult, so keep that in mind before booking the tour.

Response from the operator: Dear Sabrina, Thanks so much for your 4-star review and for sharing such honest, helpful feedback about your Great Wall hike with us! We’re thrilled to hear the stunning views and the chance to explore the older, unrestored sections of the Wall made the long drive from Beijing totally worth it for your group—those untouched parts are such a special part of the Great Wall experience, and we’re so glad you got to experience that unique beauty. We really appreciate you mentioning the hike’s difficulty, too—this is such valuable input for our future guests, and we’ll make sure to highlight this detail even more clearly in our tour descriptions to help everyone come prepared. Your feedback helps us keep refining our tours to make every guest’s experience even better, and we’re always working hard to turn those 4-stars into 5! Thanks again for joining us for this Great Wall adventure—we hope those incredible views and memories of the unrestored Wall stay with you, and we’d love the chance to welcome you back for another amazing Beijing experience soon! The Regards

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

    +

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
