What you'll see and do
Plovdiv Old Town
With this tour you will have the chance to discover the town of Plovdiv: the oldest existing settlement in Europe. It is a very beautiful place, also known as the town of the Seven Hills, and it can be reached for only 2 hours from Sofia by car. This amazing city merges Thracian, Roman and Bulgarian heritage. You will see traditional Bulgarian houses from the Revival period, walk by Roman remains and early Christian mosaics. Popular museums that can be visited in the town are the Ethnographic museum, the museum of Natural history, the Roman stadium. And you will have free time for lunch in a traditional local restourant. Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, the 5th oldest in the world and the oldest in Europe. Its history dates back to 4,000 years BC. In the beginning, the ancient settlement was situated on the natural elevation between Nebet, Taksim and Dzhambaz hills (the Three Hills). In ancient times Thracians inhabited the Three Hills and built a fortified settlement – the largest city in Thrace. In the 4th century BC Plovdiv was conquered by Phillip of Macedonia. He gave the city one of its many names – Phillipopolis, and had it surrounded by thick fortified walls. Later it became a Roman province and an important regional center. The town hosts the Roman theatre, which was successfully restored and it is presently used for different performances, concerts and events. Since this year Plovdiv is the European capital of culture, you may be able to see some of the undergoing events as well! They will be in all different aspects such as exebitions, concerts, art permormances, street parades and many others. You can write us your date of traveling and we will inform you what events will be held during that period and can be included in the day trip.

Colorful houses and Roman Ruins!
Plovdiv is a must see when visiting Bulgaria. Simon, my guide, was so knowledgeable on all the history of this beautiful town. Don’t forget to whisper your wish in Milyo’s ear!

Plovdiv Day Tour Was Very Uncomfortable
The Roman ruins in Plovdiv are wonderful to see but getting there and back may not be worth it, especially if you are over 5'10" tall. The bus -- not much bigger than a van - was small and crowded. The seats are undersized and my knees were up against the seat in front of me with no room to move. We had the bad fortune of going on a rainy day. The hilly cobblestone streets of Old Town were extremely slick and dangerous due to the rain. The streets are treacherous enough without the rain just trying to walk up and down the hills. The advertised 2-hour drive from Sofia is almost doubled because of the ongoing road construction and heavy traffic. We considered taking a train instead of a tour bus but the hotel warned us that the trains are very unreliable in Bulgaria.

Worth the Extra Spend of a Private tour to experience the wonderful Plovdiv
We had a wonderful experience. Guide was very friendly and took very good care of us espically the children. He kept us all engaged. He was very considerate to our requests. Definitely worth spending the extra money for a private tour.

Summer in Plovdiv
Plovdiv is a fascinating place and Poli is an excellent guide (and driver). The tour duration was just about perfect. Poli did a good job helping us manage the heat on the hills of Plovdiv.

Highly recommend
We had a great day in Plovdiv. Our driver/guide was excellent. He gave an informative introduction to the city & its history exactly to our request. With this information we then enjoyed free time exploring at our leisure. His driving was excellent. A beautiful city and tour.

Why this scores 59
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sofia.
How much does Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia cost?
+
Prices start at $236 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sofia usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Sofia is not rushed.
Is Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 24 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sofia, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sofia can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sofia and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Day Trip to Plovdiv from Sofia start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sofia within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Sofia?
+
On Outty we rank every Sofia experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Communist Walking Tour of Sofia, Sofia Highlights 2 Hour Sightseeing Walking Tour, Sofia Escape Room - Teorema Rooms. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Sofia?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Sofia?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
