Love to cook - this is a must!

Fun fun experience. I take cooking classes whenever possible when I travel (Bali, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, India, Mexico ...). Ibrahim, our driver, picked us up at our hotel. Because of Mumbai traffic, it took us 1 1.2 hours to get there and 2 hours to get back. Jaya and her daughter (who was off from school that day) welcomed us into their home. We made a feast of all of their everyday, favorite dishes. We made a list of spices to buy that we could not get at home (and purchased them while on a later tour of South Mumbai). Delicious and very enjoyable afternoon.

Response from the operator: Dear Mam, Thank you so much for your lovely review! 🌟 We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the cooking experience and felt warmly welcomed by Jaya and her daughter. It’s wonderful that you could learn authentic dishes and even take back some spices with you! We truly appreciate your kind words and are glad it was a memorable and delicious afternoon. Thanks & Regards,

Wonderful afternoon followed by extraordinary food - an Indian culinary experience not to be missed!.

This was one of those "one of a kind" incredible experiences with a wonderful family not to be missed. A perfect afternoon spent in the company of a charming and very knowledgeable couple, wonderful and welcoming hospitality. Not often do things just "click" but on this occasion, I probably learnt more in that one afternoon about Indian food, culture and family life than I could ever have hoped for.

Response from the operator: Dear Sir, Thank you so much for your heartfelt review! We are delighted to know that you had such a memorable and enriching experience with our family. It means a lot to hear that you enjoyed the hospitality, cultural exchange, and the time spent together. Moments like these, where everything ‘clicks,’ are truly special, and we’re so glad you could take away lasting memories of Indian food, culture, and family life. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Thanks & Regards, India Magic Tours

Real cooking in a real home

A truly wonderful cooking class in the home of Rahul and Deepika. This class is very hands on, and you actually learn how to make all the dishes, even the chapati! The end result was, needless to say, delicious.

Traditional Indian food in family home

We had a wonderful time cooking in a local family home. The husband spoke excellent English and his wife made a delicious meal.

Unique and delicious cooking lesson in the home of an Indian family - highly recommend Harsha

Short-form: This is a unique experience to go inside the home of an Indian family and gain hands-on experience preparing authentic food. Raul and his wife Harsha were attentive, gracious and knowledgable hosts during our cooking class. Raul was easy to understand. Harsha gave us plenty of opportunity to participate in the cooking. Their home, located in the Dharavi slum, was a 45 minute drive from the cruise ship terminal, but it was very interesting to see the city out the window. The transportation was comfortable and Raul was in close communication with us from the time of booking. They welcomed us with bottled water then taught us how to make the masala chai which seems to be the favorite beverage in Mumbai. Over three hours, Harsha demonstrated how to prepare chicken tikka masala, panneer and chapati. Our cooking lesson began by sautéing tomatoes, red onions, garlic, green chilies, and ginger in grapeseed oil. As the mixture cools, we prepare the dough for the chapati. Harsha prepares this bread three times per day for her family. Allowing the dough to rest, we return to the sautéed vegetables, which are now cool enough to blend to a paste which forms the base for the masala sauce. We divide the sauce into two pots and add seasonings: coriander, cumin and chili power in the pot for the chicken and chili powder and garam masala in the pot for the paneer. Later we add the cubed chicken and bones to the pressure cooker pot and the cubes of paneer – which resembles a firm cottage cheese similar in texture to tofu – to the other pot. In between, Harsha prepares a sweet dessert with boiled milk, cardamom, cashews and almonds. She presses it into a tart pan and chills it before turning back to the chapati dough. She teaches us how to roll it wafer thin, exerting just a bit of pressure on a mini rolling pin. We slip the flat disks into a dry hot pan to cook, flip it, then finish it directly on the burner, which makes it puff up like a balloon. She plucks it from the burner with tongs, stacks it on a plate and brushes it with ghee (clarified butter). We cannot resist the samples she hands us! When the food is almost ready, Raul asks if we will be comfortable sitting on the floor. The family usually eats here on the floor to avoid carrying the food and plates up the steep stairs to the second floor. Harsha serves the food in rimmed tin plates. Raul brings each pot to us, trying to spoon more food onto our plates and Harsha cooks fresh, hot chapati to sop up the delicious sauce. These people are generous and kind in sharing their way of life and I am grateful for the experience.

Private Cooking Class in Mumbai: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Mumbai.

How much does Private Cooking Class in Mumbai cost?

    +

Prices start at $113 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Mumbai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Cooking Class in Mumbai take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Mumbai is not rushed.

Is Private Cooking Class in Mumbai worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 16 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Mumbai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Cooking Class in Mumbai?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Cooking Class in Mumbai suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Cooking Class in Mumbai?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Mumbai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Mumbai and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Cooking Class in Mumbai start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Mumbai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Mumbai?

    +

On Outty we rank every Mumbai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Elephanta Caves & Island Guided Private Tour, Dharavi Slum Tour, Mumbai: Dharavi Slum & Dhobi Ghat Laundry Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Mumbai?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Mumbai?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
