1. Monumento a Filippo IV

   It is a sculptural ensemble located in the center of the Plaza de Oriente, one of the enclosures of greatest historical and artistic interest of the city. The equestrian statue, the first with the horse's front legs raised, supported on the hind legs, of King Philip IV, dates from the 17th century, and was sculpted by Pietro Tacca.

5. Royal Palace of Madrid

   It is used for State ceremonies and solemn acts. It is twice as big as the palaces of Buckingham or Versailles, being one of the largest palaces in the world and one of the most visited monuments in Spain. It houses a valuable, broad and diverse historical and artistic heritage.

6. Teatro Real

   It is a great opera house founded in 1818, one of the greatest theaters of Europe that hosts major productions involving major international figures of opera, musical direction, stage direction and dance.

7. Edificio Metropolis

   Iconic building that adds a mixture of architectural styles, such as neo-renaissance, but can also be classified in the historicist eclecticism of the French Second Empire that mixes neo-baroque with some modernist decorative touches.

8. Plaza de la Villa

   Around it there are the main facades of three buildings of great historical and artistic value from different centuries: the Casa y Torre de los Lujanes (15th century), of Gothic-Mudejar style, the Casa de Cisneros (16th century), a Plateresque palace, and the Casa de la Villa (17th century), of Baroque style.

10. Puerta del Sol

    Famous square from which Kilometer Zero of the country's radial roads starts. The oldest building is the Casa de Correos, with a tower clock whose chimes at 12 midnight on December 31 mark the traditional taking of the twelve grapes to the vast majority of Spaniards.

11. Congreso de Los Diputados

    Congress of Deputies: In neoclassical style, is one of the most emblematic buildings of Madrid in the nineteenth century.

12. Plaza del Dos de Mayo

    Located in the Malasaña neighborhood, it commemorates the popular uprising of May 2nd at the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence against the occupying French troops.

13. Plaza de Cibeles

    It it surrounded by the Palace of Buenavista, the Palace of Linares, the Palace of Cibeles, and the Bank of Spain and, in the center, it hosts the famous fountain of Cibeles.

14. Palacio de Cibeles

    Madrid's city hall is one of the first and most representative examples of modernist architecture erected in the center of Madrid, with its facade of neoplateresque and Salamanca baroque evocations.

15. Puerta de Alcala

    One of the five ancient royal gates that gave access to the city. It is of neoclassical style and has a monumental appearance similar to the Roman Triumphal Arches. It was erected facing east in 1778. At the end of the 19th century it was already one of its most characteristic icons, and numerous historical events have taken place in its vicinity.

16. Templo de Debod

    Debod's Temple is a gift from Egypt to Spain for the Spanish help after the appeal of Unesco to save the temples of Nubia, in danger of disappearing due to the construction of the Aswan Dam. It is about 2200 years old.

17. Catedral de Sta Maria la Real de la Almudena

    Main temple of the Archdiocese of Madrid, seat of the archbishop and the metropolitan chapter. It is 102 meters long and 73 meters high, and was built from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, in different architectural styles: neoclassical on the outside, neo-Gothic inside and neo-Romanesque in the crypt.
