10/10 experience in a stormy tropical storm 🤙🤙
Absolutely 10/10 recommend this company. We started off as a group of 9 inquiring about private group lessons, and I amended the booking 3 times, as our group kept increasing- 9, 12 and finally 14 gals. Each time our booking changed, communication with Che was so easy and the responses were lightning fast. With the Tropical Storm coming, we thought it would get cancelled as we were a bunch of greenies who had never stepped on a board before, however Che let us know it was moved to Langs Beach instead, so we were happy chaps. We rocked up to the beach looking like absolute weenies and the water looked absolutely wild. Smashing waves and rainy, but it was all a part of the adventure and we were keen to get amongst it. We were greeted by Corne and Leo who were the most chilled out and energetic instuctors ever, then a third instructor Ebbe rocked up with the same vibes. You could tell they had a passion for surfing and they hyped us up and we were ready to hit the waves. They sorted us out with wetsuits and rashies, and tag teamed it going through safety briefings in a fun, informative manner. We were given a board then hiked with them in the wind down the beach, looking like idiots being blown around, to calmer waters. Even that was hilarious watching each other struggle against the wind and form trains to lug the boards to the other end of the beach. Once we were in the water, Corne, Leo, and Ebbe were super helpful, laughing at us making fools of ourselves and super encouraging when we managed to stand up on the boards. God knows how they managed to keep track of us 14 flailing around in the water, but they did an amazing job and we had the best time! Never expected 3 instructors to join us on this adventure, but so happy we got all three, as they were an absolute blast! We had the time of our lives and reckon the stormy weather made it waaaaay better. We never felt unsafe. Absolute value for money and will definitely be back. What a way to wrap up April. Thanks team🤙🤙 Only downside was that we didn't manage to take any pictures of the gnarly weather, but had nothing to do with the company, we were having too much fun in the water to remember to take a few snaps.
Response from the operator: Hi Tiana, Thankyou for your review, we are so glad to hear you had such a great time with Aotearoa Surf. We would love to have you all back for another lesson and hopefully get you some better weather! Happy Surfing!

Worth every dollar
It is definitely worthwhile, my dad also took a lesson and by the end of the lesson he was able to stand up on the board and ride the wave inshore and that’s for a guy who has never surfed in his life. I was a bit more advanced than my dad and the instructor took me out back and I was able to catch my first unbroken wave, turn on the wave and I learnt to read the waves so I knew what waves to catch and which direction I should go in and in 2 hours I was able to do all this and more.

Best in Mangawhai
Thanks Aotearoa for a great afternoon. It is no small tasks keeping 5 teenage girls motivated on the water. You guys did way more...they learned heaps and had fun at the same time.

Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson cost?
+
Prices start at $123 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson take?
+
Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private 2 Hour Surf Lesson start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
