Valley of the Kings
In the morning your friendly driver will pick you up from your accommodation and transfer you to Cairo Airport for a flight to Luxor for a full day tour. Upon arrival at Luxor Airport you will pair up with your Egyptologist tour guide, who will take you to the Necropolis of Thebes, the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of Luxor, including the Tomb of King Tutankhamun. It consists of tombs embedded in the mountain Thebes. This ancient necropolis is a must-see for Luxor travelers.

Tomb of Ramses III
The tomb of Ramesses III, designated as KV 11, is a complex system in the Valley of the Kings. It has been known since antiquity,the wonderful decorations include colourful painted sunken reliefs featuring the traditional ritual texts (Litany of Ra, Book of Gates etc) and Ramses before the gods. Unusual here are the secular scenes, in the small side rooms of the entrance corridor, showing foreign tributes, such as highly detailed pottery imported from the Aegean, the royal armoury, boats and, in the last of these side chambers, the blind harpists that gave the tomb one of its alternative names: ‘Tomb of the Harpers’

Tomb of Ramses IV
The tomb of Ramses IV (KV 2) in the Valley of the Kings is rather different than most other tombs built here. This tomb is by far the most spectacular of the other tombs you will see. The hieroglyphics on the wall depict scenes from the Litany of Ra, Book of the Dead, Book of Caverns, the Book of the Heavens, Book of Amduat, and the Book of the Night. The blue and white colors on the walls inside the burial chamber are very vibrant and you can see the king's sarcophagus made of rose-colored granite. There is also a beautiful scene of goddess Nut on the ceiling, where she is depicted swallowing the sun, and it traveling through her stomach, for Nut to give birth to it.

Abu Simbel Temple
It is an archaeological site located in the belly of the mountain, south of Aswan. It is a reddish-sandy cliff, standing tall on the west bank of the Nile (now on the western shore of Lake Nasser, behind the High Dam), and made up of two large temples carved into the rock. It was built by King Ramses II , the third of the nineteenth dynasty of the Pharaohs. These two temples were among the greatest temples in ancient Egypt. They are usually called the "Great Temple of Abu Simbel" and the "Little Temple of Abu Simbel," both of which are more spacious and grandiose than all the Egyptian rock temples of all times. There are six statues at the entrance to the other temple, four of them of Ramses II and two of his wife Nefertari.

Very disappointing experience
We booked this tour through Viator, an overnight guided tour to Abu Simbel, from Luxor in Egypt, it cost us nearly £400. This was, we found out later, outsourced to Luxor Travels. Communication between us and the company (Ragab) were good in the lead up to the trip. On the day, the driver and guide were on time for pickup, that's the good bits covered. The disappointment and total disbelief came when the guide advised us in the car 30 minutes in, that it would cost us an additional $140 (over £100) to stop at the 2 temples which were on our route anyway to Aswan (our overnight stop). Now we knew they were additional items but think, what choice did we have? pay $140 or miss out. We felt they were holding us captive to pay these ridiculous prices. The 2 temples were literally a 2-3 minute detour off the main Nile road and the entrance fees to each were only Le200, a pittance. We couldn't fathom out how the company valued these additional tours at $70 a pop? After much upset and negotiating we asked our guide Omar to call the manager in the office and complain the prices were too high and they eventually agreed to do the 3 minute detour to the temples "as a gesture of goodwill" at no extra charge, but we pay our own entrance fees! Fine, thankfully that was settled, though it did leave a bad taste in our mouths. Then we were in disbelief as our "guide" Omar fell fast asleep for most of the 5 hour car drive - if there was one thing we were not dreaming of as we booked this trip of a lifetime to see Abu Simbel was a sleeping tour guide! Downright rude to be so disrespectful to his clients. On querying this at the end of the tour he stated that he was not there to be sociable, he haughtily said he was an Egyptologist and as such was not employed to talk to us! Imagine 2 whole days with a man who is your guide in a foreign land but who thinks it demeaning to talk to his clients? Not our idea of an enjoyable experience. At Aswan the Philae Temple was good to see, nice boat trip across, a short commentary from Omar. The onward 3 hour drive to Abu Simbel was boring as our guide was yet again asleep. And we get there and await this fantastic Egyptologists' expert commentary on the Abu Simbel temple, and he talks for just 15 minutes outside the temple and then disappears … he told us as we approached that guides are not allowed inside the temple! Oh and he forgot our instructions to buy a photography pass, we had to remind him after he'd got our tickets. I really think he was not on the ball. Abu Simbel itself was fantastic and nothing could take away from that. But it was a long boring journey back let me tell you. Thankfully our driver sought to stop at a mirage that we might like to witness while our "guide" Omar slept. What a joke. By the way, the driver was very good. The tour itinerary was good enough, if anyone had bothered to care for our enjoyment of it. The cost was exorbitant - it can be done locally for 1/4 of the price Viator / Luxor Travels charged us. The "guide" was the most disappointing aspect of all and he in no way should have a job providing any kind of customer service if he thinks it is beneath him to talk to tourists, his clients, and with no personality whatsoever, he just looked tired and bored! We were disgusted with his attitude and although we enjoyed the Abu Simbel temple (our main reason for booking), it was clear we'd been ripped off and if we hadn't fought for a deal we'd have been hustled into paying an extra $140 for "tours" which cost us $11 in entrance fees. One thing I will say is, we did feel safe at all times, and the driver was excellent, and Ragab was good at keeping us informed before and during travel. We just wish we'd had a good guide...

Regarding the additional visit to Edfu and Kom Ombo, we offered you extra guided visits to these two temples, for additional costs. We usually offer this option to our guests, if they did not arrange this in advance. We offer this as an option; nobody is forced to take this option. Also, a visit to these temples takes up about three hours extra, and it is not a matter of a 2-3 minute detour. To try and satisfy you, your tour guide agreed to take you to these temples anyway for no extra costs, but of course without entrance fees and guiding services. Unfortunately, we still did not manage to satisfy your wishes, even though we tried our best. But we cannot offer all our services for free. Regarding tour guide Omar, we regret to hear that it did not click with you and your tour guide. Omar has been working with us for many tours and honestly, we have never received these kinds of complaints about him, his personality and his guiding abilities. Indeed, it is a very long and tiring drive all the way to Abu Simbel. With all respect, a tour guide is there to share his professional knowledge, to make sure his guests are safe and comfortable during a tour, and to answer any question his guests have. It cannot be expected that a tour guide functions as personal entertainment during a long trip, every minute of the way. We can understand that some may find this disappointing. However, Omar tried to show his kindness by sharing his personal WiFi hotspot with you for free, by taking you to additional temples for no extra charge, and tried his best to satisfy your needs along the way. We can see that you are quite upset and dissatisfied, and we really regret that. We sincerely hope that you could give us another chance in the future to prove our word. Sincerely, Ragab El Motgalye
