Fabulous and Fascinating Historic sites with excellent Guide Nancy Unforgettable experience.

We had a wonderful 2 day trip with Nancy our guide and Mr Yang our driver. They were both first class. Nancy had excellent English and was energetic and enthusiastic. Mr Yang was an excellent and safe driver and always had a smile on his face - handing us waters and sweets. First the Yungang Grottoes - which were fascinating. Great time of year to go as empty but wrap up it’s cold! We wore ski gear. We saw the Dragon Wall at night - beautiful lit up. Datong city walls looked worth exploring- maybe next trip. The highlight was next day after the Fogong Pagoda ( work of amazing construction) we went to hanging Temple - words cannot express how incredible it is. Such a privilege to be able to walk through it perched in the mountains. Nancy was amazing explaining the history and cultural significance. I would highly recommend you ask for Nancy as your guide - we will certainly on our next trip. She also doubled as a photographer- knowing all best shots of the historic sights. Than you Nancy and Mr Yang Xie Xie.

Response from the operator: Dear Friend, Thank you so much for your detailed and glowing review of your two-day Datong tour! We are absolutely delighted to hear that you had a wonderful experience exploring this incredible city with our guide Nancy and driver Mr. Yang, and we greatly appreciate your thoughtful feedback on every aspect of your journey. Nancy’s excellent English, boundless energy and enthusiasm, as well as her profound insights into the history and cultural significance of each attraction—from the fascinating Yungang Grottoes and the architecturally stunning Fogong Pagoda to the awe-inspiring Hanging Temple—truly embody the professionalism and passion our guides bring to every tour. We are also thrilled to hear she made such a fantastic photographer, capturing the perfect shots at these historic sights for you. Mr. Yang’s expert, safe driving, warm and cheerful demeanor, and thoughtful touches like offering you water and sweets made your travels smooth and enjoyable, and we are proud to have him on our team. It is wonderful to know that the Hanging Temple stood out as the highlight of your trip, and that you enjoyed the beautiful night view of the Dragon Wall and the charm of Datong’s city walls (we look forward to welcoming you back to explore them on your next visit!). We also appreciate your helpful tip about dressing warmly for the winter visit to the Yungang Grottoes—this will be invaluable for future travelers. We will pass along all your kind words and praise to Nancy and Mr. Yang immediately; they will be incredibly honored and delighted to hear how much they contributed to your memorable Datong experience. Thank you for your heartfelt recommendation of Nancy, and for choosing our tour to discover the wonders of Shanxi. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you back to Datong (and beyond) for more extraordinary adventures in the future, and wish you all the best until then!

Breath taking temple

Although we did not get the cahnce of climbing up to the temple, it was also breath taking to see it at the bottom. There were too many tourists on that day, the queue was from the top to the bottom of the stairs. This was due to the closure of road leading to Yungang Grottoes for the Tour of Taiyuan.

Great side trip from Beijing, excellent guide

Jenny picked us up at hotel early a.m. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Drove us to Yungang Grottoes first day, then dropped us off in Datong for the evening. Stopped enroute for excellent handcut noodles in Datong. Jenny gave us lots of information and insight on history and culture. Second day visited Shuozhou Wooden Pagoda, then hanging temple, which was breathtaking, before returning to Beijing. Highly recommend. Jenny made it particularly special.

This tour was a side trip for us and...

This tour was a side trip for us and was well worth it. We left Beijing in comfort. When we arrived to Datong we were met by a local guide who took us to the grottoes and Hanging Monastery, which are incredible. We also saw some other site which was great before going back in comfort to Beijing.

Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beijing.

How much does Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes cost?

+

Prices start at $218 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beijing usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes take?

+

Plan for about 48 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beijing is not rushed.

Is Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beijing, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 48-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes?

+

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 48-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private 2-Day Datong from Beijing with Yungang Grottoes start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beijing within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

+

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
