Great Crew, But Definitely Not a “Premium” Catamaran Experience

It’s a bit of a stretch to call this a “Premium” catamaran experience. In reality, this felt more like a mid-to-low-end booze/party cruise. The Viator description is somewhat misleading. The catamaran we were on, the Smooth Life, was older and somewhat dated and could use some upkeep. The itinerary advertised also isn’t really what’s possible. You essentially have to choose between snorkeling and going to Isla Mujeres—you can’t realistically do both as described. The crew was clearly geared up for a party, which may be exactly what some groups are looking for. However, we were a family of seven and weren’t looking for quite that level of partying, so the experience wasn’t necessarily the best fit for our group. That said, the crew was spectacular. Humberto, Angel, Angel, and Carlos were fantastic. They quickly recognized what our group was looking for, adapted to us, and were extremely accommodating throughout the trip. Their attitude and service made what could have been a disappointing experience into a very enjoyable one. Overall, I’d recommend setting expectations appropriately: don’t book this expecting a premium catamaran experience. If you’re looking for a casual, lively party cruise with a great crew, you’ll probably have a good time.

    Viator dropped the ball

We arrived to our check in area and the tour company did not have our reservations. We initially booked a private tour but were told the boat had maintenance issues. After a lot of going back and forth we had to do a group tour. Although the staff was great and the snorkel experience was really good we were disappointed Viator dropped the ball. We messaged the boat company the day before with a few questions yet we never heard back.

Response from the operator: Another traveler enjoying our activities, although we were unable to accommodate your private tour this time, we apologize for any inconvenience. Don't forget to book your spot to enjoy the beautiful Isla Mujeres snorkeling tour on a catamaran, which includes drinks and a buffet lunch. Overall, would book again

Overall, I’d book this again. Our family of 11 (7 adults and 4 kids) had a great day sailing over the beautiful turquoise water of the Mexican Caribbean. It was too windy to snorkel at the reef (nothing to do be done about that), but we did see plenty of fish at Playa Norte, which the kids loved. The catamaran isn’t fancy but is perfectly comfortable, and the crew is very pleasant and accommodating. I’d say this is more of a sailing trip than serious snorkel trip, but maybe that would be different if the weather was calmer. If you’re thinking about booking, here’s my advice: use Uber to arrive at the meeting point (it’s less than $5 from the hotel zone and takes 5 minutes) and bring snacks for the boat. If you pick the tour without lunch, have a restaurant in mind on Isla Mujeres because the one they’ll bring you to is VERY overpriced and there are plenty of other places on the beach with great food for half the price. Spend as much time as you can on the boat or in the water vs. on the island, because that’s really the best part of the experience. It says the duration is 5 hours, but we didn’t sail until 10 am and returned at 5 pm, so plan accordingly. Pack plenty of sunscreen because there’s very limited shade on the boat. They’ll be taking pictures the whole time (underwater too) and will sell you the package for $60 at the end, but will take $50 if you haggle (still too much but hey, it’s a memory and they’re not half bad). Have a great time!

Response from the operator: Thank you for your valuable feedback. There are times when weather conditions are beyond our control; however, our team is highly skilled and will ensure you have an excellent day. Book now and enjoy the wonders of our destination: catamaran, sun, water—all in one day. Enjoy snorkeling and exploring the underwater figures in the protected natural area. Blessings. Great Staff, Terrible Boat Condition

We booked a private catamaran to Isla Mujeres for $950 and had very mixed feelings about the experience. I want to start by saying the staff were great—friendly, attentive, and clearly doing their best throughout the trip. They were the highlight of the day. Unfortunately, the boat itself was a major disappointment and nothing like what was shown in the listing photos. It felt extremely old and poorly maintained - honestly like a much older, worn-down version of what was advertised. The condition below deck was particularly concerning. It was disheveled and in rough shape, and the bathroom was frankly disgusting. It felt unsafe at times, with what seemed like loose or unsecured flooring in areas where you’d expect proper structure. Safety was also a concern. When one of our friends tried to get into the water, only one side of the ladder was secured, which didn’t inspire confidence. For the price we paid, we expected a clean, well-maintained boat that matched the photos and description. This experience fell far short of that. If the listing accurately reflected the condition of the boat, expectations would be different - but as it stands, this felt misleading.

    Stop searching and book now.

Amazing. Stop looking and just book. These guys are awesome. If you can request anyone I would 100% ask if you can request the crew mate Jesus(chickenin) he made everyone on the boat feel comfortable and cared about the entire time. He even walked and called a taxi for us to go back so it was safe and legit.

Response from the operator: We want to publicly thank you for your valuable comment. Our team works to make your vacation unforgettable. Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cancun.

How much does Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran cost?

    +

Prices start at $950 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cancun usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cancun is not rushed.

Is Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 340 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cancun, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran?

    +

Around 119 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cancun can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cancun and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Premium Isla Mujeres Tour by Private Catamaran start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cancun within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cancun?

    +

On Outty we rank every Cancun experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Early Access to Chichen Itza All Inclusive with Valladolid and Cenote Swim, Whale Shark Tour from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Riviera Maya, Small-Group 3 Hidden Cenotes Adventure with Tequila Tasting. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cancun?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cancun?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
