Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is one of the most famous caves in the world. It is Slovenia’s greatest tourist attraction and one of the largest karst monuments on the planet. This is the only place in the world where you can explore an underground landscape by electric train and encounter the cave’s most famous resident - the proteus (olm) - up close. A mesmerizing network of tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls, along with an incredible variety of karst formations and easy accessibility, are the key reasons for the cave’s enduring popularity, attracting more than 36 million visitors over the past 200 years.

Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle stands proudly above the surrounding landscape near Postojna Cave, in the charming village of Predjama. This picturesque, majestic, and mysterious fortress has perched dramatically halfway up a 123-meter-high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic charm is further enhanced by the Lokva River, which disappears into the underground depths beneath the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, Predjama Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and architectural skills of the Middle Ages, when people sought - and found - shelter right at the entrance to the cave. During a siege in the 15th century, the castle became the refuge of its most famous and notorious owner, Erazem of Predjama. The legend of this daring knight and rebellious robber baron, who defied his besiegers for over a year until betrayed by a servant, still captures the imagination today - an enduring tale of courage, defiance, and mystery.

A must-see
Spectacular caves, worth visiting. The Italian-speaking guide Alexandra was very knowledgeable and friendly

Perfect day!
What an excellent way to spend a day! Stephan was such a gracious tour guide, educating us on history and making sure we knew what we were about to see! The castle is breathtaking - a must see. The cave with the train ride was so fun! Amazing what nature does underground! Literally another world!!

Spectacular cave (with lots of walking) and unique castle (with lots of stairs)
This is a great tour… The cave is stunning and very beautiful. The cave tour lasts approximately 90 minutes which includes the 20 minute train ride in and out. Once inside you will walk approximately 1.5 Km and many sections of the path are very steep (uphill and downhill slopes). The walking part of the tour is guided with audio in several languages. Unfortunately , we found the audio difficult to hear at times. Make sure you bring a coat. The cave temperature remains at 10C (50F) throughout the year. The castle was very interesting and guests are provided with a self-guided audio tour available in many different languages. The information in the audio guide was excellent. Visiting the castle involves climbing many many stairs. Some of the stairways are very steep and the steps can be uneven in a few places. Contrary to the description, this is NOT a wheelchair accessible tour.

Beautiful, but requires a lot of walking on uneven terrain!
Stunning views from the castle and postman’s cave is beautiful! However, my husband and I were traveling with my elderly parents and this tour requires a lot of walking on inclines, declines and uneven terrain and poor lighting in the cave. Our fitness watch clocked 7,000 steps total. Several people outside of our group struggled to complete the amount of walking required. This outing should be advertised as vigorous, not as an electric train ride through the mountain. You will ride the train for a few minutes at the beginning, then you will walk approximately 5,000 steps, and then you get back on the train for a few minutes. Both landmarks are beautiful and worth seeing but you need to be relatively fit to complete the amount of walking required. Our tour guide Mia was fabulous! She shared a lot of information with us about the Slovenian culture! Highly recommend!

Recommend very highly!
Wonderful trip! Wish we had more time in both locations so we could have gone into the museums/aquarium associated with them. There was no time built in for eating or shopping. Our guide, Tadej, was full of knowledge about his country, its history, geography, economy, and culture, spoke great English, and welcomed questions with a sense of humor. We’ve been in many castles in different countries in Europe, but this one was stunning and unique. The caves were the same. Our tour started late, robbing us of valuable time to eat, shop, use the bathroom or look into a museum, but that wasn’t Viator’s fault. The driver was in place 40 minutes before the meeting time, which was clearly communicated. Directions to the meeting place were clear. We took lots of pictures and videos to show the grands!

Why this scores 69
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Trieste.
How much does Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste cost?
+
Prices start at $137 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Trieste usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste take?
+
Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Trieste is not rushed.
Is Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 24 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Trieste, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Trieste can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Trieste and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle Day Trip from Trieste start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Trieste within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Trieste?
+
On Outty we rank every Trieste experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Trieste: Unique Food Tour with Local Flavors and Tastings, Prosecco Origins Wine Experience, Private Trieste Sightseeing Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Trieste?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Trieste?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
