Stop: Portland Fish Exchange Visit the Portland Fish Exchange, one of the only remaining working fish auctions in the United States. On auction days, you may witness the fast-paced sale of fresh catch as fishermen and buyers move through the process in real time. On non-auction days, you’ll still get a behind-the-scenes look at how seafood is landed, handled, and prepared for market, along with insight into the systems that keep Portland’s fishing industry running. This was an amazing tour....

This was an amazing tour. Our tour guide was engaging and very knowledgeable about the history and the working fish/pier. I highly recommend this tour to everyone

    Highly recommended.

This is the best tour we have ever taken. We have done Viator tours all over the world and this is the best. Our guide grew up the son of a local lobster fisherman and worked the waterfront since he was a teenager. He knew and clearly explained in a manner we could understand everything about the lobster business, processing and marketing. Plus since he knew everyone by name we were able to go inside facilities where the normal public is not allowed. Highly recommended.

    Great Introduction to Portland

Peter was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable and personable. We got a good understanding of the fish and lobster industry past and present. The pace was leisurely and Peter kept us engaged with lively commentary as we moved through the wharf/docks area of the city. Finishing up with an authentic lunch at the ISF lunchroom was perfect.

    Recommend for sight seeing

We had a great time! It ended up just being the two of us and our guide, Alie. She was extremely knowledgeable and had an answer to all our questions. The walk was easy and showed a lot of cool and historic sites. Lunch was fun too, some fresh uni and sushi! Alie was great and we really enjoyed our day!

Response from the operator: We truly appreciate you taking the time to share this with us! The Working Waterfront tour is such a pride and joy for us; Portland's history as a true working town is integral to what it is now, and it's something we're incredibly proud to showcase. Alie is so great at highlighting it and we're so happy to hear you had a good time with her on the tour. Thanks for joining!

    Excellent tour

We took this tour during a recent visit to Portland. The downtown meeting area was very convenient to many hotels, including ours. Our guide, Elise, met us on time and we learned that we'd be the only two guests. Elise did a great job. She's a high school history teacher so had a great deal of knowledge about Portland and its history. She showed us a variety of things in the downtown area that relate to the history of the waterfront and its current operations. This included a tour of the fish auction pier. We concluded with a very nice bowl of chowder and we appreciated the "pivot" from sushi since we don't eat raw fish. We had a great time and highly recommend this tour.

Response from the operator: Than you so much for taking the time to share this! Elise is second to none when it comes to knowledge of Portland and passion for sharing it with others (perks of being a history teacher!), and her ability to pivot to ensure a fun tour is what makes her a fantastic guide. We're glad you had fun, and thank you so much for joining us!

Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Portland.

How much does Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood cost?

    +

Prices start at $79 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Portland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood take?

    +

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Portland is not rushed.

Is Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 70 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 21 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Portland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood?

    +

Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Portland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Portland and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Portland Explorer: Working Waterfront Walking Tour with Seafood start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Portland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Portland?

    +

Portland sells lighthouse and lobster-boat tours in Casco Bay, Old Port food and brewery walks, seal and puffin cruises, and fall foliage runs up the Maine coast. On Outty we rank every Portland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include The Real Portland Tour: City and 3 Lighthouses Historical Tour with a Real Local, Portland, Maine: Hidden Histories Guided Walking Tour, A Walk Through Time Tour in Portland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Portland?

    +

June to October, with peak foliage in early October. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Portland?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
