Then, continue to the craft market. Everyone wants to bring back home a small piece of Mauritius and we understand why! The Craft Market, located at Caudan, will surely help you in finding your piece of Mauritius. Based on a two-storey building within the Caudan Waterfront complex, The Craft Market is known for its unique craft collection. With 36 stalls, visitors will get a wide variety of products ranging from exquisite woodwork to detailed baskets without forgetting beautiful glass souvenirs. You will also find items made from seashells, boxes of ground spics, embroidered linen, handmade jewelry, and the very famous African rag doll dressed in a typical sega outfit. Many of the handicrafts are made by the stalls owners, their families, or sourced from their villages, so you will get the chance of meeting the artists behind the paintings on sale or even witness your name being engraved on a wooden keychain. The location of The Craft Market is definitely one of the best as well.

Then, head to the local market. We know that you will probably never be fed up with beaches but a visit to the Central Market located in Port Louis is a must for anyone visiting Mauritius. Here at the bustling Central Market, you will find shops that fit all your needs, ready-made garments, spices, jewelry, watches, shoes, crafts amongst others. We do recommend tasting the dhal puri, made with split chickpea and flour, and the famous alouda, almost like a milkshake with basil seeds, grated jelly, and sometimes a scoop of ice. If you wish to try some of the local snacks, you will find a large choice of samosas, bajas (fritters made with chickpea flour) or gato piment (fritters made with yellow split pea and chilli). The Central Market remains busy as it is one of the main shopping spots for locals and attracts people across the island for shopping. It is definitely worth a visit for you to learn more about how locals live and experience the Mauritian vibe.

China Town
China Town is filled with shops, many being over a hundred years old. Some chinese families have been running their businesses for generations and would rarely opt to upgrade to newer building structures. We came across quite a few tiny and dark retail shops. These were the ones that gave us the Chinese- Orient feeling. China Town does have new generation buildings as well where some businesses operate. Trade has always been part of the Sino-Mauritian culture. For long China Town was the trade center in Mauritius but this declined with the introduction of supermarkets on the island. China Town declined as a commercial hub and lost its former glory- many of the Chinese shops (we lovingly call them “la boutik sinwa”) were abandoned which left China Town desolate.

Afterward, you'll head to visit The Aapravasi Ghat which is a World Heritage Site located on the Bay of Trou Fanfaron in Port Louis. This historical site served as an immigration depot by the colonial British government in 1849. It has played a pivotal role in the Mauritian history, as it is from this very instance that the Mauritian population became more diverse than ever. It was here that indentured laborers transited before starting a new life on the island or set off to other distant lands. Between 1834 and 1920, about half a million immigrants, mainly from India, some from China, Madagascar or Africa, began working on the various sugar plantations across the island.

Port Louis highlights
Booked this the night prior and was efficient and easy. Communication was good immediately after booking and Vijay our very good driver and guide was great too, getting in contact arranging pick up and also during the trip, providing good info and letting us also explore in our own time. Worst guided tour we have taken
We were completely disappointed by this service, which cost about 115 euros for 2 people. First of all, I informed the guide on the Viator site that they should not come to pick us up at the hotel because we were changing hotels that day, but that we could meet directly at Port Louis because we have a car. The day before, the guide confirmed the meeting at 8:30 AM at Caudan, but in the morning at 8:00 AM, he sent us a message to tell us that the meeting was at 9:00 AM and we were already on our way. Finally, the guide arrived at 9:20 AM and we had to send him our location because he did not know Caudan Square, even though it is very central. From the moment he arrived, we understood that he did not really know what to show us because he did not know any of the schedules. He showed us the Craft Market and told us to walk around, but there are only souvenir shops, so when you have seen one, you have seen them all. To pass the time, he then suggested we go see a museum at Caudan, but since it cost money, he only suggested we visit the small souvenir shop with a few books for sale. Then we left on foot for the Aapravasi Ghat museum, and on the way, we only got a few very brief sentences about the history of Mauritius, and he showed us the old post office building without any further explanation. Arriving in front of the museum, he told us to go visit it while he waited outside (it was certainly nicer to be on his smartphone than to be with us). We then left for the fruit and vegetable market. Arriving in front of it, he told us to look at the stalls for 15 minutes while he went to do something. When he returned, he told us to follow him into the market, and he bought a container of cut fruit (he did not know what fruits were in it), a white roti, and then a milk drink (total expense about 6 euros). We then walked to Chinatown to enjoy a dish, but the restaurants were closed and we retraced our steps because, for him, there was nothing to see in that neighborhood. I should specify that during the walk, he did not speak and did not explain anything to us. Finally, he asked us to wait 25 minutes at one spot while he went to get the car to go see the citadel. We decided to stop the tour at that point because, for us, he was not a guide and we do not need to pay a guide to walk in the streets and buy 3 little things to eat. We have already done this type of excursion in cities in Europe and it was top-notch, but this time the guide was catastrophic and the tour a disaster.

An enjoyable and informative trip.
We enjoyed this trip which included a visit to the citadel, craft market, sea front, food market and a visit to Aapravasi Ghat Museum. Our guide Vash was friendly and knowledgeable. He contacted me the day before to introduce himself and confirm pick up time. He picked us up from our hotel and took us back afterwards. We tried a couple of food items and an alouda milk drink, which were very nice. We found the museum very interesting and thought provoking and would have liked more time there than the 30 mins we had but still enjoyed it. This trip is very useful and informative for a first time visitor to Port Louis and I would recommend it.
