Polonnaruwa and Safari Tour: Good Experience with a Few Caveats
This tour included transportation to Polonnaruwa for self-exploration in the morning and a safari in the afternoon. The driver-guide was friendly and knowledgeable about elephants. Participants pay the entrance fees themselves for Polonnaruwa and the safari park at the official ticket offices. But please note that the tour operator may ask you to: [1] Pay an additional US$30 for the driver to take you around the various monuments in Polonnaruwa. Otherwise, you will need to walk or rent a bicycle; [2] Pay an additional US$30 to visit Kaudulla Park instead of Minneriya Park for "more elephants". I recommend consulting AI for this decision. I am unable to give this experience a full score because the tour started one hour late. The tour operator explained that a technical issue with Viator had caused them to miss my booking.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your detailed and honest feedback. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed the Polonnaruwa visit and the safari, and that our driver-guide was friendly and knowledgeable, especially in helping you spot elephants. We would like to clarify a few points you mentioned. The optional US$30 in Polonnaruwa is for guests who prefer to explore the ancient city comfortably by vehicle with the driver, as the site is quite large. Otherwise, as you noted, guests are free to explore independently by walking or renting a bicycle. Similarly, the option to visit Kaudulla instead of Minneriya is always based on real-time wildlife movements, with the aim of giving our guests the best possible elephant sightings. Regarding the delayed start, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. This is not the standard of service we aim to provide. We understand how important timing is, and we are already reviewing this issue internally to ensure better coordination in the future. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us as it helps us improve our service. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again and provide you with a flawless experience next time

Mahesh is the best!
Mahesh was a fabulous driver and guided us to the best locations. We had an incredible day visiting the Ancient City and going on Safari. Mahesh made sure we got really close to the elephants and we really appreciated his care and kindness. He provided lots of interesting information about the animals in the park and made sure we spent as much time as we wanted at each location. Mahesh really is the best and we highly recommend him.

Mahesh will be especially happy to know that his guidance, knowledge, and care made your experience so memorable. Elephant safari and ancient city
Our group of 3 couples were picked up by our guide Oshita in his jeep at 7.30 am and went to Minneriya National Park for the morning. We saw many elephants as well as some birds. Oshita was very helpful finding the right spot to get closer to the elephants. He was also a good bird spotter. We then went to Polonnaruwa ancient city and walked around the sites. We stayed with Oshita and did a self guided tour. It was very hot so we didn't do the full tour here. Oshita took us to a local, authentic Sri Lankan place for lunch, Rasa Bojun Gedara. The food was great and we highly recommend. Thanks Oshita for being a wonderful guide, very flexible and accommodating of our wishes, also taking us to a very good souvenir shop where we got good quality TShirts. We had a great day on this trip with Oshita.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your wonderful review! 😊 We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your day with Oshita. Seeing elephants in Minneriya, exploring the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, and enjoying authentic Sri Lankan food sounds like a perfect day! Oshita will be very pleased to know that his guiding, bird spotting, and flexibility helped make your experience special. Thank you also for recommending the local restaurant and sharing your kind words about the souvenir shopping experience. It was a pleasure hosting your lovely group, and we hope to welcome you again for another adventure in Sri Lanka!

Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sigiriya.
How much does Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari cost?
+
Prices start at $75 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sigiriya usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Sigiriya is not rushed.
Is Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 30 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sigiriya, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari?
+
Around 11 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sigiriya can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sigiriya and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Elephant Safari start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sigiriya within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Sigiriya?
+
On Outty we rank every Sigiriya experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sajee’s Place Cooking Class sigiriya, Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants, Organic cooking class sigiriya (kumara & family). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Sigiriya?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Sigiriya?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
