Vanishing Art of Making Fish Traps
In the quiet village in northern Vietnam, bamboo was being split, bent and woven into fish traps, just as it has been for more than 200 years. During a Leica photography journey with Momentlives, we stepped into a world where time seemed to stand still. Patient hands transformed slender strips of bamboo into graceful fish traps, each one crafted without haste and guided by knowledge passed from one generation to the next. These ingenious traps, set in flooded paddy fields, winding streams and shallow coastal waters, once provided the fish that nourished village families through the changing seasons. There were very few craftsmen left, and all well advanced in age. Watching their seasoned hands of Mr Bac, aged 87, and Mrs Buom, 71 weave with effortless precision was like witnessing history come alive. They learned the craft as children, yet today they carry a tradition that is quietly slipping away. Most young people have left for Hanoi or found work elsewhere. The labour is demanding, but each trap sells for barely a US dollar. Our cameras captured more than beautiful images. They recorded resilience, dignity and a way of life that deserves to be remembered. By visiting villages like this, travellers become more than observers. Their presence helps supplement the artisans’ modest incomes while giving new value to a heritage that might otherwise disappear unnoticed. The finest journeys are those that leave footprints not only on distant paths but also in our hearts. They remind us that every disappearing craft is a chapter of humanity’s story—and that preserving it begins with seeing, appreciating and sharing it with the world.

Great Photo Tour Experience
My family and I truly enjoyed "The Vanishing Craft of Making Fish Traps" photo tour. I think limiting the participants into small groups is really ideal and it became an exclusive tour for us. All of us, especially my daughter who is starting to learn photography, learned a lot from James. He also communicated very well and had good rapport with the locals in the village. The ride was comfortable as well, so it was a really a good experience.
