  1. Nine Arches Bridge

Commissioned under the British in the year 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge stands proudly, a testament to the engineering and architectural brilliance of the early 20th century. Ideally placed between the Ella and Demodara railway station, those choosing to walk along the bridge will be presented with scenes of rolling hills and dense jungle to delight in. The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky’ was constructed by connecting two bog mountains when constructing the Badulla – Colombo railway. This bridge is 300 feet in length, 25 feet in width and 80-100 feet in height. It is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The Bridge can be reached by travelling 2km on Gotuwala road starting from Halpe Textile centre in Badulla Bandarawela road. The surrounding area has seen a steady increase in tourism due to the bridge’s architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides.(Stage 16)

Because of the geographic situation of the nearby mountains, the railroad is designed to take a loop around the mountain and then go underneath the railway station. Demodara Loop is considered as the one and only such construction in the world that proves engineering marvels of colonial era. This glorious and picturesque small railway station is situated between Ella Railway Station and Uduwara Railway Station. This train journey is rated as one of the most scenic train rides in the world. It’s worth to go there at the time of train pass the station. That’s awesome.

  3. Demodara Loop

Considered to be one of the best places to visit in Ella, the Demodara loop is definitely not to be missed out. The loop is known to be called the ‘circular loop’, the ‘spiral loop’ and even the ‘spiral ride’. Demodara tunnel and railway entrance referred to as the Demodare Loop, is where the rail line travels around a spiral loop beneath itself and appears out of a tunnel located precisely underneath the Demodare train station. This engineering marvel is the only spiral loop in the world where a tunnel lies under a railway station. Folklore claim the idea was inspired by observing a supervisor in a tea estate unfasten and retie his turban.

Brilliant walk from Demodara to Ella.

What a great walking tour with Sampa! Prompt pick up from our accommodation in a tuk tuk, then a lovely walk through a tea plantation, past a Hindu village, then a Buddhist village to the famous Nine Arch Bridge we had crossed in the train the day before. Timing was perfect to get a fresh king coconut and another bottle of water five minutes before a train came over the bridge. Then it was just a short walk into Ella, our final destination. We saw lots of other people walking the trail but without a guide. Sampa made our experience so much more fulfilling as he told us what many of the flowers, trees and fruit were. We even tried mini guava straight from the tree! We saw Sri Lankan jungle fowl (similar to a pheasant) and a juvenile eagle, as well as a kingfisher and a woodpecker. Altogether a brilliant tour and well worth it (additionally the restaurant recommendations and contact with his tuk tuk driver were super useful).

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for sharing such a lovely review! We’re really happy to hear that you enjoyed the walk with Sampa and that he helped make the experience more than just a hike. It sounds like you had a wonderful day exploring the tea plantations, villages and Nine Arch Bridge, with some great wildlife and fresh fruit along the way! We’ll be sure to share your kind words with Sampa. Thank you again for choosing Ella Holidays and for recommending us. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope to welcome you back to Ella someday!

+

How many days do you need in Ella?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
