It is known as much for its decoration, as for being the temple in which popes are chosen and crowned. The construction of the building was between 1473 and 1481 during the mandate of Pope Sixtus IV, to whom it owes its current name. What grabs the attention in the Sistine are the frescoes that completely cover the walls and the ceiling. Some of the most important artists who worked in the chapel are Botticelli, Perugino, Luca and Michelangelo. It is located in the central part of the vault and represents the story from Genesis in which God gives life to Adam. Located over the high altar Michelangelo's other masterpiece, The Final Judgment.

Incredible experience!
Our guides were phenomenal! Guiliana treated us like members of her family with tips for dinner and shopping. Also, she was able to lead us through all the lines to get us to the front row to see the Pope. I got a picture of him looking right at me. So amazing! After the papal audience, we met up with Mattia, who was the most knowledgeable guide we had on our whole trip. He took us through the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. We learned so much, and he was friendly with a positive energy the whole time. The only thing negative I can say about the experience is it is very long. We arrived the day prior and were pretty tired. We were with one guide or another from 6:30am to 4pm. It was too long, but if you are rested and prepared for this to be one whole day of your trip, definitely book it!

The Best tour and guides you can get!
Worth your money! Rosanna and her team got us as close to the Pope as they can. Very informative tour of the Vatican museums, the Sistine chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. We were so happy with their service that we also got a Panoramic tour of Rome and the Padre Pio tour in San Giovanni. Rosanna did her best to accommodate all of our requests especially for my mom who needed frequent stops and toilet breaks. My mom was so fulfilled and happy with this trip! Rosanna was like family during our brief stay. We will surely be back and tour with her team again!

An Epic Experience with Romeitalyexplora’s Rossana and Co
Rossana Lanucara and her assembled team went above and beyond in every respect to get us front row seats for the Papal Audience, directed us to the best place to lunch, cleanest walk right in restrooms, and set us up with Francesca for a three hour Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica tour that was as informative as it was enchanting! We traveled with our hyperactive three and five year old grandchildren and the three hour private tour seamlessly flew by as Francesca was great engaging the children and us every step of the way!!! Rossana camped out to secure our six front row seats, Julianna and Luigi picked us up promptly from our hotel with bright smiles setting the tone for our epic eight hour Private Vatican tour and Papal Audience. Juliana even directed me to the best store in Rome to purchase my husband’s favorite shoes and directed us to look into the basement level for a hidden viaduct that services the fountains in the nearby square! All six of us were absolutely amazed and beyond grateful for the talent, dedication, knowledge, patience and compassion of Rossana and her team - truly an epic experience and worth every Euro!!!
