What you'll see and do

  1. Santuario Padre Pio

A large modern structure where the remains of Padre Pio rest The Church of San Pio da Pietrelcina is the quintessential reference point for devotees of Padre Pio, beatified by John Paul II in 1999 and proclaimed a saint by the same pontiff three years later. The large church, designed by architect Renzo Piano and completed in 2004, stands in San Giovanni Rotondo, where the Capuchin friar died after residing there for many years. The imposing building was commissioned by the same Capuchin Friars Minor to whom Padre Pio belonged. Its purpose was to house the saint's relics and easily accommodate the thousands of faithful who choose to visit San Giovanni Rotondo as a pilgrimage destination, offering them an almost mystical experience. The Church of San Pio is a large modern structure, surrounded by a huge churchyard and composed of an upper church, dedicated to liturgical celebrations, a smaller lower church, and a crypt, which houses the saint's remains.

  2. Convento Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with its convent, is known as the place where Padre Pio of Pietrelcina lived and died from July 28, 1916. The construction of the first church dates back to the 15th century; due to the increase in visitors, work on a new church began in 1956. The old church is rectangular with a simple façade; inside, it has a single nave in Baroque style with four chapels dedicated to saints. The high altar features a wooden fresco of the Madonna and Child, flanked by Saint John the Baptist and the Evangelist. The old church of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses the urn containing the remains of the martyr Saint Maximiana, beneath a minor altar. The convent includes Padre Pio's cell, open to visitors, and the crypt where his body was kept before being transferred to the nearby sanctuary, designed by Renzo Piano. A tour inside the convent allows you to visit places significant to Padre Pio, such as the cell and the choir of the ancient church.

  3. Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo

The Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel is located in Monte Sant'Angelo, in the province of Foggia, and is part of the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo. The sanctuary consists of an upper basilica, which includes the Romanesque portal, the bell tower, and a lower basilica, which includes the cave where, according to tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared. It is also known as the Celestial Basilica, as it is believed to have been consecrated by the Archangel Michael. This minor basilica is one of the main centers of worship dedicated to the Archangel in the West, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. The sacred cave is accessible via a long staircase. The Archangel's words are engraved here: "Where the rock opens, there the sins of men will be forgiven."

Take this tour! So much more than religious sights!!

Absolutely FANTASTIC! Elizabeth was so knowledgeable and helpful. So much more than religious sights. I would book this tour just for the drive through the Italian countryside. Our driver was great. A lot of driving, and we always felt safe and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed everything on the tour. The espresso at the morning pitstop was one of the best on our trip through Italy and France. Later, Elizabeth helped us find a restaurant for lunch and checked in on us to make sure that we didn't need anything. She knew the shops and was able to help guide us find particular items. She and our driver were able to show us points of interest along the way. Very knowledgeable and able to answer questions and provide insights at the sights as well as on the drive without adding her personal opinions or beliefs. (We had a really bad experience at the coloseum with a different tour company.) We told our b&b host to recommend it to his other guests. Truly a highlight of our trip and worth including in your trip!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re truly delighted to hear that this experience became one of the highlights of your trip. Elisabetta will be very happy to know how much you appreciated her knowledge, helpfulness, and thoughtful attention throughout the day, from helping with lunch and shopping to sharing interesting insights along the journey. We’re equally pleased that your driver made the long drive feel safe, comfortable, and enjoyable, and that the beautiful Italian countryside became such a memorable part of the experience. It means a great deal to us that you valued the informative and respectful way the tour was conducted, allowing you to enjoy the history, culture, and religious significance of the places visited without feeling influenced by personal opinions. We also love hearing that even the morning espresso became a special memory. Thank you sincerely for recommending the tour to your B&B host and for choosing to spend such an important day with us. We hope to welcome you back to Italy for another unforgettable experience.

Wonderful Experience

The tour was excellent. I traveled with my 60-year-old parents, and both enjoyed it immensely. The transportation was very comfortable, with well-organized stops for coffee or restroom breaks, which made the trip very pleasant. At each destination, both in San Giovanni Rotondo and in Monte Sant’Angelo, we had enough time to listen to the explanations, take photographs, admire the relics, and enjoy the places without rushing. Without a doubt, Elisabetta was an exceptional guide and companion: kind, knowledgeable, and always attentive to every detail. I also want to highlight Fabio, our driver, who made the trip comfortable and safe.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re delighted to hear that you and your parents had such a meaningful and enjoyable experience visiting San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant’Angelo. It’s wonderful to know that the comfortable transportation, well-planned stops, and relaxed pace allowed you to fully appreciate each destination without feeling rushed. Elisabetta will be very happy to hear that her kindness, knowledge, and attention to detail made the day so special, and we’re equally pleased that Fabio provided a safe, smooth, and comfortable journey throughout. Thank you sincerely for choosing our tour and for your kind words about our team. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your family back to Italy for another memorable experience.

Wonderful Tour, Incredible Guide, and No Crowds!

We had such a fantastic experience with Juliana as our tour guide. She was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely caring. When she noticed my mom needed assistance, she helped arrange a wheelchair so she could comfortably enjoy every part of the tour—something we truly appreciated. We visited on a Monday, so there were no crowds, which made everything even more peaceful and enjoyable. The Padre Pio Sanctuary was wonderful, and St. Michael Cave in Italy was unforgettable. Juliana went above and beyond to make the entire day special. I highly recommend her!

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review. We are truly delighted to hear that you had such a fantastic experience with Juliana. It is especially rewarding to know that her knowledge, enthusiasm, and caring approach helped make the day so memorable for you and your family. We are particularly pleased that she was able to assist your mother and arrange a wheelchair so she could comfortably enjoy every part of the experience. Providing attentive and personalized service is something we greatly value, and it is wonderful to know that this made such a positive difference. We are also delighted that you enjoyed both the Padre Pio Sanctuary and the unforgettable visit to St. Michael’s Cave. We will be sure to share your kind words with Juliana, who will be thrilled to know how much her efforts were appreciated. Thank you for your recommendation and for choosing to travel with us. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again on another memorable experience in Italy.

Tour of Italian countryside and Catholic Shrines

The trip is very interesting especially if you are Catholic and the guide was very friendly. It is still a new tour for this company so guides are learning. Beware it is a great distance from Rome. The return trip was 4 hours in light traffic. The scenery was beautiful on the ride especially along east coast of Italy

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your experience. We are pleased to hear that you found the tour interesting and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the journey, particularly the stunning views of Italy’s eastern coastline. We are also glad that you appreciated the friendliness of your guide. As you mentioned, this is one of our newer tours, and we are continuously working to refine and enhance the experience based on valuable feedback from our guests. The destination is indeed located a considerable distance from Rome, but we are happy to know that the landscapes and unique sites visited along the way contributed to making the journey worthwhile. Thank you for traveling with us, and we hope to welcome you again on another memorable experience in Italy.

Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.

How much does Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome cost?

+

Prices start at $128 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome take?

+

Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.

Is Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 70 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome?

+

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Padre Pio and St. Michael’s Cave: Private Full Day Tour from Rome start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

+

Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

+

April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rome?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
