1. We begin in Chickpete, one of Bengaluru's oldest quarters, laid out in the 16th century when Kempe Gowda founded the city around its central market wards. Its narrow lanes still hum with the wholesale silk and textile trade that gave the area its name — a working maze that has defied every attempt at a straight line.

2. Tucked into the din of Chickpete stands a pocket of stillness — a Shwetambar Jain temple whose marble interiors feel worlds away from the lanes outside. Step in and the noise falls back: cool stone underfoot, soft light, and the quiet devotion of a community that has traded and worshipped here for generations. The craftsmanship rewards a slow look, from delicate pillarwork to painted detail overhead. The contrast with the market makes it all the more striking — a reminder that Bengaluru's old city holds sanctuaries as readily as it holds commerce.

3. We make our way along Avenue Road, the spine of the old city — a single thoroughfare packed shoulder to shoulder with booksellers, jewellers, and century-old sweet shops. The smell of jasmine and frying snacks drifts from side lanes as we walk toward the great market ahead. Chaotic, colourful, and utterly Bengaluru.

4. KR Market

   Krishna Rajendra Market — KR Market to everyone — is the beating heart of the old city and one of Asia's busiest flower markets. It stands where Tipu Sultan's forces once clashed with the British, and today it's pure colour and negotiation: mountains of marigold and rose, porters balancing impossible loads, and vendors' calls filling a space that never truly sleeps. We take our time through the flower, fruit, and wholesale sections for a slice of daily life few visitors see up close. Come with your senses open — this is commerce as theatre, and Bengaluru at its most alive.

5. Bangalore Fort

   We pass the remains of Bangalore Fort — the stronghold Kempe Gowda first raised in 1537, later rebuilt in stone by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Its gates close by 5pm, so we admire it from outside, where the surviving Delhi Gate still speaks of the sieges that shaped the city. From nearby KR Market Metro, we then hop on a short metro ride south toward the evening's final stop.

6. Everything so far has been the build-up — this is what the day has been walking toward. As evening settles, the city shifts gear & so do we. The lanterns glow, the griddles start hissing & the feast begins. We ease in with snacks Bangaloreans have grabbed on their way home for generations. Pull apart a congress bun — a soft roll hiding a punch of spicy peanuts — & wash it down with fresh avocado or sitaphal juice. Then the fryer: bajji in four avatars — pineapple, banana, chilli & potato — impossible to stop at one. Follow it with gossamer-thin dose slicked with butter, & a warm holige whose jaggery filling tastes like grandmother made it. Then we head north. Peri peri paneer with a fiery kick. Pav bhaji in a cloud of butter & spice — torn, dunked, devoured. A tall jalebi, coiled & syrup-soaked, with cool rabdi & a soft kesar jamun. The finale is unhurried — a spongy rasgulla & a kulfi melting faster than you can finish. A full stop on a sentence the city wrote all evening.
