What you'll see and do
Ella Train Journey is considered as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Due to the repair works of train track, now train starts from the Ambewela station. Which is located close to Nuwaraeliya. It creates very beautifully, green scenery from the moment you start the journey till you reach the end. The train travels among the hill areas/mountains, tea estates, over the rivers & waterfalls, etc. Train is operating daily and what you receive is the ticket from Ambewela to Ella with reserved seats (Seat number is printed on the ticket) Tickets will be allocated from 2nd or 3rd class reserved coaches depending on the availability. There is no much difference between the two classes as both comes with openable windows where you can enjoy the best of the scenic journey. Only the passengers with reserved seats are allowed to travel in this train and no standing passengers. Therefore train is not getting crowded as the ordinary coaches with unreserved seats.

Book through here !!
Chathuri secured our family of 6 tickets for the Ella train. It is quite difficult to buy tickets for such a popular route, and Chathuri did this for me after I booked ahead with him. I highly recommend doing so! His communication was timely and always kept me in the loop. If you are keen to experience the train, then look no further but to book here. It’s an amazing opportunity!

Three hours standing on a crowded train
Sadly the “Famous Blue Train” was a bust in my opinion. It’s very overcrowded and therefore unless you’re one of the fortunate few to get a seat you’re standing for over three hours with people pushing past you all the time. And if you’re thinking of going there and back in a day to look around, forget it! You have less than 1 hour before the last train returns to Ella so few options to eat or drink and then you’ll be out of the queue for seats so you’ll spend another 3 hours standing up on a crowded train. When the scenery does appear out of the banks along the track it’s often so quick you don’t get a good photo anyway. And if you’re standing your photo is taken through the dirty glass window. For us and others passengers it felt like a waste of a day and very tiring. My recommendation is don’t go just for a day but if you have to or want to ride the train spend the money and reserve a seat.

Amazing train Experience
The process is easy, after the purchase they text you in one day. Tickets arrived the day before and the trip went good even if it was in flood days. The communication with Nalin has been easy and professional.

Fair and transparent booking service
They booked reserved tickets for us when these were no longer available in the official site. I assume they track cancellations etc. It's not a cheap service but they were transparent and fair all along the way, and eventually were able to book the tickets for us, which enabled a great experience for us.

Nalin got us train tickets. The communication with Nalin was very good. We received updates on a regular basis. The responses were quickly and helpful. I would recommend Mahaweli tours and holidays

Why this scores 50
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kandy.
How much does Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets cost?
+
Prices start at $24 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kandy usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kandy is not rushed.
Is Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 50 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 47 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Kandy, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets?
+
Around 16 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kandy can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kandy and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Nuwaraeliya (Nanuoya) - Ella Train Tickets start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kandy within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kandy?
+
On Outty we rank every Kandy experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Explore Kandy City Tour by Tuk Tuk, Tours and Transportation in Sri Lanka, Chauffeur guide and Tour organizer. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kandy?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kandy?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
