Fabulous trip

A wonderful trip to see the wildlife here, bird island and the excitement when we saw dolphins and a turtle. Snorkelling for those who wanted to, nice lunch included. Tip - only eco friendly sun cream allowed so you may want to wear long sleeves to protect yourself from the sun

Response from the operator: Sian Kaan Biosphere is filled with life and diversity, it's home to different species of birds, reptiles, mammals and the marine life is abundant That is the reason why it has to be protected at all costs, it's one of the jewels in the world We are glad that you got to enjoy it, Mexico and The Riviera Maya have plenty more to offer! We hope to see you again soon

Fascinating Place - but use a different tour operator

The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a fascinating place! However, getting there is not easy. The road from Tulum down along the coast towards Punta Allen is a dirt track, full of potholes, requiring slow travel speeds. So plan on a 2-hr ride to cover 10-12 miles. (We still think it is worth the lengthy travel.) We booked this particular tour because it was offered through a TripAdvisor, and assumed the tour operator would be of good quality. This was not the case. The tour operator was ½ hour late picking us up (originally scheduled at 5:50 am). The tour director slept in the front seat until we reached Playa del Carmen. The tour van stopped at a gas station, where we were told we should change into our swimsuits. We each paid 5 pesos to get access to a filthy stall in a dirty bathroom. Once we entered Sian Ka’an Biosphere, the tour director gave a short introduction to what our plan was for the day, in Spanish, intermixed with English – speaking very rapidly. Somewhere south of Zamach, we finally transferred into 3 boats that took us down the lagoon. We stopped at a place where there were a couple of porpoises periodically surfacing. We were able to observe them for a bit. We then traveled further down the lagoon to the barrier reef, where we were provided with snorkel and fins so that we could snorkel along the reef. However, this activity only lasted about 15-20 minutes. We gathered back in the boats and sped back up inside the reef to a sandy area beside a spit of land, where it was shallow enough that we could stand and swim in the water. Here we spent 40-45 minutes, before climbing back in the boats and traveling up the lagoon to a small village. (I did not catch its name.) We had a nice fish lunch here. We next learned that the second part of the tour (viewing manatees) would not happen because the guide for it was not available. (Again, the explanation from our guide was very brief.) We then circled around the island of birds (Isla Pájaros), which was very interesting. Such a profusion of different birds. Then it was back to the van, and the 2-hour ride back to Tulum. When our guide was asked about a kind of fish, his answer was, “It’s a fish. I don’t know.” Questions about flowers or birds yielded a similar response. The ride back out the dirt road was much rougher because the van was being driven faster. We were thrown hard against the insides several times. When we arrived in Tulum, I was surprised to see that the guide switch out of the driver’s seat and the original driver take over. Our trip down the dirt road was not as rough when the regular driver was driving. We will go back to Sian Ka’an in the future, but we will find a more reputable tour company with whom to travel.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your experience with us We have noted all the comments that you made, we will work into the improvements of the tour along with the guides performance

Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cancun.

How much does Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel cost?

+

Prices start at $198 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cancun usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel take?

+

Plan for about 13 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cancun is not rushed.

Is Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 55 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cancun, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 13-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cancun can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cancun and add a light layer if any part of the 13-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Natural Reserve of Sian Ka'an Tour! Boat Ride and Snorkel start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cancun within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cancun?

+

On Outty we rank every Cancun experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Early Access to Chichen Itza All Inclusive with Valladolid and Cenote Swim, Whale Shark Tour from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Riviera Maya, Small-Group 3 Hidden Cenotes Adventure with Tequila Tasting. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cancun?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cancun?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
