If hiking the Samaria Gorge feels too challenging, the Imbros Gorge offers a gentler alternative. This 8-kilometer trail is less strenuous but equally captivating. Imbros is the second most popular gorge in Crete, running parallel to the Samaria Gorge. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to hike, with the narrowest part just 1.60 meters wide. The first half-hour descends through wildflower meadows before narrowing dramatically. Legend has it that two brothers banished from Imbros in Turkey settled here, naming the gorge. Historically, it served as the main route between Chania and Chora Sfakion and was a critical evacuation path for British soldiers during WWII. The trek ends at Komitades, where you can relax at a local café. From there, we continue to Chora Sfakion for a swim and lunch by the Libyan Sea. The tour includes hotel pick-up and a guide who will share insights about the area's flora and history.

    Great tour of Imbros Gorge

We had a very nice tour of the Imbros gorge. Maria and Jeremy were awesome. We ended the tour with a drive to the beach and had some good food. Note, you can leave your towels and swimsuits in the vehicle if you would like so you don’t need to carry it on the hike. I considered the hike down pretty easy to slightly moderate. If it’s rainy it might be slippery in some parts.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your kind review! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your tour of Imbros Gorge and that Maria and Jeremy made it memorable. We’re glad the beach stop and meal added to your experience, and your tip about leaving towels and swimsuits in the vehicle is very helpful for future travelers. Thank you also for sharing the difficulty level—it’s a great guide for others. We hope to welcome you on another Cretan adventure soon! GS Tours Team

Rocky trail - need shoes with tough soles

We hiked down the gorge, which was not hard but very rocky, so you were looking down all the time. Our guide was dedicated to mountaineering and a native of Crete - quiet and professional. The driver, Maria, was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was an excellent driver and we felt like we were in good hands on the curvy mountain roads. Be sure to bring a euro coin if you want to use the restroom prior to the start of the hike.

Response from the operator: Dear Robbyn, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback on the Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge. We're glad to hear you had a safe and enjoyable experience with our team. Indeed, sturdy footwear is a must for navigating the rocky terrain, and we appreciate you highlighting this for future guests. It’s great to know that both our hiking guide and Maria made your journey comfortable and informative. We hope to welcome you back to Crete for more adventures! Best regards, GS Tours Team

Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chania.

How much does Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge cost?

    +

Prices start at $765 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chania usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Chania is not rushed.

Is Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 53 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Chania, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chania can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chania and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Natural Private Tour of Imbros Gorge start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chania within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Chania?

    +

On Outty we rank every Chania experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cretan Safari – 4x4 Adventure to Preveli Beach with Lunch, Elafonisi & Falasarna Small Group Tour from Chania w/snacks, Half-Day Rethymno Quad Safari. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Chania?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Chania?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
