After guiding passengers for 22 years as a conductor on the JR Chuo Line, Samurai Guide Sho brings together the train ride, a Mt. Takao hike, a visit to Yakuoin Temple, and an onsen in one private journey tailored to you

What you get

    About this experience

After guiding passengers for 22 years as a conductor on the JR Chuo Line, Samurai Guide Sho brings together the train ride, a Mt. Takao hike, a visit to Yakuoin Temple, and an onsen in one private journey tailored to your group. Depart from Shinjuku or Tokyo Station and travel comfortably to Mt. Takao aboard the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating). The tour ends at Shinjuku Station. This time, you are the “passenger.” At Mt. Takao, walk through the quiet forest, enjoy local mountain specialties along the way, and experience Japanese culture at Yakuoin Temple as you gradually slow your pace and clear your mind. On clear days, see Mt. Fuji from near the summit, then enjoy panoramic views from the chairlift on the way down. Sneakers are fine, and children are welcome. At the base, relax at an onsen or tattoo-friendly bathing facility. You can also stop at a local craft beer taproom. Return to Shinjuku in comfort aboard the Green Car, with time to relax and reflect on the day.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Tokyo Central Railway Station

Departure from Tokyo Station is also available. This meeting point is convenient for travelers staying near Tokyo Station, Marunouchi, Otemachi, Nihonbashi, Ginza, and other major central Tokyo areas. There is no need to travel to Shinjuku before the tour. Meet Sho at Tokyo Station and board the JR Chuo Line Green Car together for the journey toward Mt. Takao. This reduces morning travel and transfers, allowing you to begin the day comfortably in spacious premium seating.

      10 minutes here

    2. Shinjuku Southern Terrace

Departure from Shinjuku: A Train Journey to Mt. Takao A former JR Chuo Line conductor who spent 22 years watching over this railway will personally guide his “passengers” on a train journey to Mt. Takao. Begin the journey from Shinjuku Station with Samurai Guide Sho, who worked for JR East for 23 years, including 22 years as a conductor on the JR Chuo Line. On this journey, you are the “passenger.” Walk through the complex Shinjuku Station with a former conductor, then usually travel toward Mt. Takao in comfort on the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating). Outside the window, Tokyo changes from Shinjuku’s skyscrapers to residential neighborhoods and everyday life along the railway, and gradually into mountain scenery. Watch as Tokyo slowly takes off its tourist face and reveals another side of itself. On this journey, the destination is only part of the story. The train ride itself is part of the experience. When the train doors open, a slower side of Tokyo begins.

      10 minutes here

    3. Mt. Takaosan Hiking Course

Walk Mt. Takao at Your Own Pace At Mt. Takao, we do not rush along one fixed route. The route is adjusted to your group’s fitness level, ages, the weather, and crowd conditions. For first-time hikers or families with children, we can combine the cable car or chairlift with an easier and more comfortable walking route. For guests who want a more active experience, we may choose a hiking trail through quiet forests and past a traditional training waterfall. Listen to the trees, breathe in the mountain air, and walk slowly at your own pace. This is not a hike that rushes to collect every famous sight on Mt. Takao. It is time to enjoy a slow break in nature, much like people living in Tokyo taking the train to the mountains on their day off.

      90 minutes here

    4. Mt. Takao

Reach the Summit and Look for Mt. Fuji We make our way toward the summit of Mt. Takao using a route suited to your group. One of the highlights of the journey is the moment when you leave the quiet forest and the mountain view suddenly opens in front of you. Reaching the summit on foot brings a satisfying sense of achievement that cannot be measured simply by distance or height. On clear days, you may be able to see Mt. Fuji from near the summit. Even when Mt. Fuji is hidden by the weather, this is a place where the noise of central Tokyo feels remarkably far away. Rather than rushing to the next stop, take time to enjoy the scenery and experience the summit at your own pace.

      20 minutes here

    5. Takaosan Yakuo-in Yuki-ji Temple

Visit Yakuoin, a Historic Mountain Temple Visit Yakuoin, a historic temple located on Mt. Takao. This is more than a place to look at buildings and take photographs. Take time to experience the atmosphere of a temple surrounded by the mountain. Tengu statues, mountain worship, and the blending of Buddhist and Shinto traditions create a world that is uniquely Japanese and still alive today. As you walk through the temple grounds, see the statues and buildings in front of you, and feel the quiet of the mountain, you can experience the atmosphere and history of the place for yourself. The focus is not on memorizing facts, but on being present and experiencing the place through your own senses. Pause for a moment and allow your mind to settle.

      40 minutes here

    6. Mt. Takao, Monkey zoo, Wild Grass Garden

A Quiet Pause in the Forest Along the way to the summit and Yakuoin Temple, there are quiet places surrounded by trees. Rather than rushing toward the next famous spot, we can pause when needed, breathe in the mountain air, and take a relaxed break. The changing colors of the trees, birdsong, and glimpses of Tokyo through the leaves are also part of Mt. Takao’s appeal. Instead of collecting famous sights one by one, enjoy the scenery and sounds that naturally appear during the day. On this journey, even a moment of doing nothing can be part of the experience.

      20 minutes here

    7. Takaotozan Cable Car

Descend in a Way That Suits Your Group After enjoying the summit and Yakuoin Temple, we descend according to the weather, crowd conditions, trail conditions, and your group’s energy level. Depending on the day, we may use the cable car, chairlift, or walk down the mountain. The chairlift lets you feel the mountain breeze and enjoy open views, while the cable car offers a memorable ride along the steep mountainside. Walking down allows you to experience the forest from a slightly different perspective than on the way up. Rather than making your group follow one fixed plan, we choose a comfortable and suitable way to descend. The journey down is not simply transportation. Even the time spent leaving the mountain is part of the story of Mt. Takao.

      10 minutes here

    8. Mt. Takao

Finish the Day with an Onsen and a Local Craft Beer Taproom After walking on Mt. Takao, relax at a bathing facility suited to your group. The standard option is a natural hot spring at the foot of the mountain. For guests with tattoos, we can arrange a tattoo-friendly bath and sauna or a local public bath with an open-air bath. Whether you have tattoos or are traveling with children, your guide will help you choose the right option, so Japan’s bathing rules never become stressful. Soaking in warm water after a mountain walk is a distinctly Japanese way to finish the day. Rest your legs, warm your body, and let the journey settle. You can also stop at a local craft beer taproom in the Mt. Takao area and enjoy fresh beer brewed locally. Mountain, temple, onsen, and local craft beer come together in a relaxed day beyond the Tokyo shown on tourist maps. If you prefer not to bathe, the final part of the tour can be adjusted to suit your group.

      90 minutes here

    9. Suica's Penguin Park

We return to Shinjuku on the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating). After enjoying the onsen or local craft beer, relax in your seat and watch the scenery outside change from mountains to residential neighborhoods and finally back to the city. Walk through the forest, experience Japanese culture at Yakuoin Temple, rest in warm water, and enjoy local flavors. Take time to look back on the day as we return to Shinjuku. The destination is only part of the story. The journey itself matters too. This is not simply transportation back to Tokyo. It is the final train ride shared by a former conductor and his passengers, with time to enjoy the lingering feeling of the journey. We usually arrive back in Shinjuku at around 5:00 p.m., making it easy to plan dinner or enjoy the rest of your evening in Tokyo. The tour ends at Shinjuku Station. If you are continuing toward Tokyo Station, you may remain in the same Green Car after Sho gets off at Shinjuku.

Title: A Perfect Escape: Enjoying Nature Away from the City Crowds

I had an incredible time on this tour, which was the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Meeting at Shinjuku was incredibly convenient, and our guide, Samurai Guide Sho, made the whole process seamless from the very start. I was especially impressed by the Green Car ride; the seats were so comfortable, and it was a huge relief to avoid the stress of typical crowded trains. The hiking pace was adjusted perfectly for the summer weather, allowing us to enjoy the nature without feeling exhausted. To top it off, soaking in a hot spring right after the descent was the absolute highlight of the day, making it a truly memorable experience.

    Great experience

Sho is very proactive and extremely helpful ...he stayed in touch much before the day of hike and explained the journey and what to expect. The day visit was super good and we thoroughly enjoyed it as a family ... a great immersion into temple prayers and a lovely hike

Response from the operator: Dear Sai_G, Thank you so much for your wonderful review. I’m very happy to hear that you and your family enjoyed the Mt. Takao tour. Sharing the Goma prayer ritual at Yakuo-in Temple with you was also a very special moment for me. It felt like we stepped together into a deeper part of Japanese culture, and that time will stay in my heart. I also have a warm memory of eating local Hachioji ramen with your family on the mountain. The atmosphere was very peaceful and kind, and I truly enjoyed guiding you. Thank you again for joining my tour. I hope your family carries this Mt. Takao memory with you for a long time. Warm regards, Samurai Guide Sho

A Thoughtful Mt. Takao Experience with Samurai Guide Sho

I joined a Mt. Takao tour with Samurai Guide Sho, and it was a truly memorable experience. One of the most meaningful moments was spending quiet time in front of the waterfall used for training. Standing there without thinking about anything felt surprisingly calming and grounding. Before the hike, I mentioned that I am not comfortable with stairs. Sho immediately adjusted the route to avoid stair-heavy paths, which allowed me to enjoy the hike without knee pain. His consideration and flexibility made the experience very comfortable. At the summit, the view was slightly hazy, but we could still see Mt. Fuji, which was deeply moving. It is amazing that such a beautiful landscape exists so close to the city. We also visited a temple near the summit, where taking time to pray naturally brought a sense of mental clarity. After descending the mountain, relaxing in the onsen and enjoying a craft beer afterward was the perfect way to end the day. Everything felt more rewarding because we had taken the time to walk, reflect, and slow down.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your heartfelt review. I am truly happy to hear that the quiet time by the training waterfall and the feeling of slowing down in the mountain became such meaningful parts of your day. I also appreciate that you told me in advance about your discomfort with stairs, which allowed me to adjust the route so you could enjoy Mt. Takao without strain. It means a lot to know that seeing Mt. Fuji, even through a slightly hazy view, spending time in prayer at the temple near the summit, and ending the day with the onsen and a craft beer all came together as a deeply rewarding experience for you. Walking slowly, pausing, and regaining clarity is an important part of what I hope to share on this tour. Thank you again for joining me, and I hope we can walk together again someday.

A Calm and Trustworthy Hike with a Modern Samurai

I joined this hike because I was intrigued by the idea of being guided by a modern-day Japanese samurai. The samurai’s name is Sho. He arrived at the meeting point dressed exactly as shown in the photos. I found myself wondering if this was what a samurai wears on his day off. His appearance and calm presence immediately put me at ease, as I was feeling a little nervous at first. Sho has over 20 years of experience not only in hiking, but also with Japanese railways. I have some interest in trains, and although it was just a short time, he shared a few fascinating insights about Japan’s railway system, which I really enjoyed. We began our hike alongside the cable car tracks, which are part of the railway system as well. I had brought full hiking gear with me, but Sho explained that as long as you wear comfortable clothes, it’s more than enough. He was right. Comfortable walking shoes and layers that are easy to put on and take off were all I really needed. Throughout the hike, Sho regularly checked in with me about my walking pace, hydration, and clothing. We talked about Mt. Takao, Japan, and also about ourselves. Perhaps because we were walking in nature, the conversation felt very natural, and I found myself opening up without even realizing it. Time passed quickly and pleasantly. At one point, Sho suggested that we stop talking, put our phones away, and simply feel nature. In that quiet moment, I noticed sounds and sensations I would normally never hear. It was a very refreshing and memorable experience. He also shared insights drawn from his experience, such as mentioning that although it was the off-season, the good weather meant there were more people than usual, or that the river level was lower that day. These small details made the hike feel very grounded and authentic. We alternated between enjoyable conversation and moments of silence in nature, and before I knew it, we had reached the summit. Sho took me to a spot with a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji, which was truly stunning. What I felt after joining this tour was that a modern samurai is not only fascinating, but also a kind, reliable, and thoughtful trip advisor. Thank you, Samurai. Thank you, Sho.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. I am truly happy to hear that my calm presence and appearance helped you feel at ease, especially when you were a little nervous at first. It means a lot to know that you were able to enjoy Mt. Takao naturally, while also feeling comfortable trusting me with the pace, clothing advice, hydration, and the overall flow of the hike. I also feel honored that you enjoyed not only the mountain itself, but also the small details I shared about the railway, the weather, and the subtle conditions of the day. I was especially happy to hear that the quiet moment when we stopped talking, put our phones away, and simply felt nature became a meaningful part of your experience. Being able to share both conversation and silence, and then enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji together, means a great deal to me. Your final words, “Thank you, Samurai. Thank you, Sho.” stayed with me deeply. Thank you again from my heart, and I truly hope we can walk together again someday.

A calm and special day with Samurai Sho

This was one of my favorite days in Tokyo. Our guide, Sho, was very friendly and made everyone feel comfortable. From the first meeting at Shinjuku, everything went smoothly. During the hike, he kept a relaxed pace and checked on everyone. We always felt supported. I liked how he shared stories when needed, but also respected quiet moments. It made the walk very peaceful. After the hike, the onsen and food were perfect. It felt like a well-earned reward. This was not a typical tourist tour. Thanks to this Samurai guide, it felt personal and warm. I would happily join his tour again.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. I am truly happy to hear that this became one of your favorite days in Tokyo. It means a great deal to me that you felt comfortable from our first meeting in Shinjuku, and that the relaxed pace and regular check-ins made you feel supported throughout the hike. I am especially glad that you could enjoy the balance between quiet moments and the stories I shared along the way, and that the whole day on Mt. Takao felt peaceful and personal to you. Knowing that the onsen and food after the hike felt like a well-earned reward makes me very happy as well. Thank you again from my heart, and I would be very happy to walk with you again someday.

Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.

How much does Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor cost?

    +

Prices start at $21000 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor take?

    +

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.

Is Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 16 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Mt Takao Hike & Onsen by Train from Shinjuku with Ex-JR Conductor start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tokyo?

    +

Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

    +

Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tokyo?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
