Standing at about 733 meters above sea level, it may not be extremely tall, but it is well known for its frequent volcanic activity and rich geological features. Since the 17th century, Mount Usu has erupted many times. The most recent eruption occurred in 2000, leaving behind clearly visible volcanic remains. Today, the area has become a natural classroom for studying volcanic landscapes and geological formations.

Non Stop Spectacular Day
We started the day at the Sapporo TV tower, pick up instructions were straight forward. Everything started on time. The first stop was after about 1.5 hour drive. We stopped at Jigokudani, a geothermal crater. The landscape was pretty dramatic. Enough time to look around and taken pics. Second stop was Cape Chikyu. A quick hop off the bus to take pics and use the restrooms. It was quite misty so not a perfect view, but still pretty good. Third stop was Sairo Observatory. Very dramatic scenery. A good photo stop. Forth stop Mt Usu. We had a choice of going to the town or up the mountain. We chose the mountain as we wanted to go up the cable car (ropeway). Views were fabulous at the top of the cable car. Final stop was Lake Shikotsu, photo and an ice cream. The day has quite a few stops so fits In quite a lot. Alex explained all the timings really well and kept the group in order. Everyone stayed on time. The day has a lot of time driving on the bus, but the stops make it very worthwhile.

Comprehensive tour, well organized
Taking a guided tour was the simplest way to visit all the sites as public transport is difficult and would take more time. It was a long tour (10 hours), but worth the trip and the money paid. The tour was in Mandarin and English, so I needed to all explanations twice. For this tour, see if you find a discount on Klook.

Long and exhausting due to too much driving
Our guide was great and very informative. But there were too many stops and very less time at each stop. We spent about 5 h 45 m driving and 25-35 m at each stop. I would take away one or both Lake Toya stops and extend the Lake Shikotsu stop. It was a very exhausting tour.

Despite the typhoon, a great day!
As luck would have it, our day was impaired by typhoon level rain. We could not see most of the views today, but being able to explore the region with the help of our great guide (Oscar!) was still quite memorable. He did an amazing job of organizing us and suggesting lunch plans, etc. Thank you!
