About this experience

Step inside Galway cities only working distillery & discover the fascinating story of Ireland’s original spirit, poitín – outlawed here for over 300 years. Learn the real history of poitín and whiskey, how they’re made, and what makes Micil’s spirits so unique. Your guide will take you on a journey from the hills of South Connemara, where our founder first distilled poitín in a small stillhouse, to today’s distillery, run by his great-great-great-grandson. Along the way, you’ll hear daring, funny and heartfelt stories from our family’s illicit past, while experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of a working distillery. The tour includes three guided tastings from our award-winning portfolio – a poitín, a whiskey and a gin – distilled right here around you. Loved Micel Disillery Tour!

Marcus did an excellent job sharing the stories and history of the spirits. We learned so much and left with a fond appreciation of the distillery. Highly recommend!

Bucket List MUST!

This was the BEST tour! I've done several distillery, brewery or winery tours... our guide at Micil was great! She gave us so much information about the history of spirits in Ireland and Galway, very interesting and different than the North American story. The tastings were generous and our guide obliged one guest with a substitution when requested. I came back to the States with multiple bottles, which NOW are rare, and highly prized as "one of a kind" in my home Pub. Enjoyed every minute and sip.

Worthwhile trip and value for the money!!

Really nice place and good atmosphere. The knowledge of the presenter was awesome! The drinks were good and good service if you wanted to test the other drinks they had. Also very nice that they serve food in the bar below which you could go to afterwards or in advance. Worth a visit, definitely!!

Go to Micil! You will not be disapponted!

This was an amazing experience. I believe her name was Evie but not sure of the spelling. She was very informative, went through the history,, processes, the lay of the land and especially the myths about Poitin. We were fortunate because the other people coming didn’t show so we had her to ourselves. We were able to sample everything and I am bringing home a few bottles, t-shirts and a wonderful memory of Micil. I would recommend this to anyone.

Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Galway.

How much does Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey cost?

+

Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Galway usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey take?

+

Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Galway is not rushed.

Is Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 88 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 304 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Galway, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 18. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey?

+

Around 106 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Galway can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Galway and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Micil Distillery Experience 2 - Gin, Poitín and Whiskey start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Galway within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Galway?

+

On Outty we rank every Galway experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cliffs of Moher & the Burren Tour from Galway, Galway to Aran Islands Inisheer, Doolin, Cliffs of Moher Day Tour, 12:00 Cliffs of Moher Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Galway?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Galway?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
