Breathtaking Views and a Perfect Salmon Bake

We took a cruise to Juneau, Alaska and booked the Mendenhall Lake kayak and salmon bake excursion. This was the highlight of our trip. The meeting point was conveniently located near the cruise dock, and transportation to the lake was quick and easy. Paddling on Mendenhall Lake was unforgettable. The scenery was so breathtaking that I did not want to return to the ship. I wanted to stay and explore the trails around the lake and glacier. Our small group made the experience feel like a private adventure with friends rather than a crowded tourist activity. Our guide kept us moving at a steady pace so we could cover the surprisingly large area and enjoy stunning views of the waterfall and glacier. After kayaking, the salmon bake was absolutely delicious and the perfect way to end the day. This excursion was worth every penny and is highly recommended.

    Awesome Adventure While in Juneau!

My wife and I did this excursion while in Juneau on our cruise. This was an awesome use of our time! Maizy was our guide, and she did a great job getting us ready for the trip and giving her insight on the glacier and Alaska in general. We got a great view of the glacier then turned around to head back to shore. It rained and we got wet. It was fun. Bring a change of clothes if you're worried about getting wet while on the water. The salmon bake portion of the trip was great as well. Good food and a relaxed atmosphere with live music. You can head back to port with a shuttle at your own leisure. Overall great time in Juneau!

My elderly parents were very comfortable while they watch whales and orcas from the comfort of the inside of the boat!

We lost count of how many Orcas and Humpback Whales we saw! The boat is comfortable and easily accessible! Hannah’s commentary was informative and entertaining.

Gorgeous but wet, cold & no pictures

We were on a Celebrity cruise for my Mom's 70th bday & did this excursion on 6/13/24. She has done some kayaking on trips before & I own one so figured this excursion would be fine. Our guide Claire was very nice & knowledgeable. Stating at the very beginning this is a 5 mile roundtrip paddle. If that had been stated in the description my Mom wouldn't have gone as that was just too much for her. However it states being able to paddle 2hrs which sounded ok since she had done it before. Beware it states you will be provided with FULL raingear so we didn't pack any. All we got was rain boots & our feet were the ONLY part of us that was dry. Somehow our kayak took on water & we were sitting in it the entire time. Not enough to cause a major issue just be highly uncomfortable, wet & cold. We weren't able to go to the salmon bake dinner afterwards. You could literally ring out our clothes that was how wet we were & we didn't bring any extras with us. We received a very small refund from Celebrity for missing the dinner. Our kayak guide took pictures of us during the paddle & asked us to put our emails in a note on her phone. I never received any pictures. I've reached out to Celebrity who is willing to give us a travel credit for next cruise- kudos to their customer service. I also reached out to Alaska Travel Adventures on 7/1/24 but no response. My Aunt who is our travel agent also has reached out with no response. This really is a great excursion- fun & amazing views. If we had been wearing the proper raingear we might have been able to make it to dinner & not completely soaked. I'm most disappointed at not receiving the pictures & being able to include them in a photobook for her as this was a special trip for my Mom.

Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Juneau.

How much does Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure cost?

    +

Prices start at $319 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Juneau usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Juneau is not rushed.

Is Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 48 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.4/5 across 23 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Juneau, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure?

    +

Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Juneau can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Juneau and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Mendenhall Lake Kayak and Salmon Bake Adventure start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Juneau within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Juneau?

    +

Juneau runs Mendenhall Glacier trips, whale watching in Auke Bay, helicopter glacier landings with dog sledding, and rainforest hikes. Most tours are timed to cruise ship windows, so we weight clear duration and pickup detail. On Outty we rank every Juneau experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching, Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier, Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Juneau?

    +

May to September, peaking for humpbacks in June and July. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Juneau?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
